9:04 AM (47 minutes ago) to me

Dear Peter,

New America was founded 20 years ago as something different—an edgy, young think tank dedicated to bold new ideas at the “radical center” of the political spectrum and with a mission to create a new generation of public intellectuals through a nationally competitive Fellows program. We have flourished and focused our mission and vision over the last two decades. With your support today, we can ensure that New America will help shape a new America—through ideas, policies, technology, local experimentation, and great storytelling over the next twenty years.

Today we are putting forward a vision of how we can renew the promise of America; how we can change the way we live, learn, work, vote, access and use technology, and show up in the world. It is a vision consistent with our highest ideals as a country and with the radical honesty necessary to face how often and how far we have fallen short of those ideals, But it is also a vision of the better America we are fully capable of becoming in an age of rapid technological and social change.

I am reaching out to you because you are a member of the New America community. Perhaps you are a former or current fellow or staff member, one of the hundreds of people who have produced our wonderful work. You have been with us from the beginning, watching us grow and change or are one of the thousands of people who read our books, blogs, and reports, come to our events, participate in our tech sprints or human-centered design days, or partner with our programs as part of an advocacy campaign or a solutions network. Or perhaps you are one of our funders, without whom we would not be able to do what we do. One of the greatest pleasures of my job over the past six years has been to meet so many of you.

New America has a grand vision, and we are driving toward it with some of the best thinking, research, and writing on important public problems anywhere, in some of the following areas, among many others;
  • The Ranking Digital Rights Index, rating technology companies around the world in terms of how well they recognize and respect our digital rights.
  • Our Partnership to Advance Youth Apprenticeship, which is working with scores of organizations across the country to allow high school students to begin learning and earning in a structured relationship between schools and local businesses, opening new career pathways.
  • Political Reform’s Polyarchy blog and relationships across the country with organizations determined to reform our democracy, in part by moving away from a two-party system.
  • A Better Life Lab podcast series that has millions of listeners on how women and men can become more productive and have more, and more equal, time with family.
  • A whole set of programs creating the data, concepts, and coherent understandings of the future of American and global security.
  • Hubs across the country in Indianapolis, Chicago, California, New York and Phoenix, connecting communities around the future of work and spreading ideas from national to local and back.
  • A Public Interest Technology network of over twenty top universities across the country dedicated to building a pipeline of public interest technologists. And so much more!
We need your help. We have doubled our budget in six years and dramatically expanded our impact and our community of supporters. And we are just getting started! As I look toward 2026, America’s 250th birthday, I feel a deep sense of urgency about the changes we need to make, not to return to an imagined and partial past, but to move forward to a future in which we live up to our own highest ideals—for all Americans.

We can only do that with your support. We launched a 20th Anniversary Campaign to raise an additional $2 million to expand our impact and advance our mission; we’re halfway there. These funds will support:
  1. Talented people - more fellowships for a new generation of public intellectuals who focus on big ideas independent of political ideology
  2. Inspirational stories - editorial and partnership activities to engage wider and more diverse audiences in honor of founding board chair, James Fallows
  3. Practical implementation - to test and promote policy solutions through our growing practice of combining ideas, human-centered design, technology and local experimentation
I could not be more honored or happy to be able to do this work, with an extraordinary team of colleagues, partners, and supporters like you. I ask that you consider contributing to our 20th Anniversary Campaign today. You can donate online or mail contributions to:
