Are we really making the progress SB is reporting?

Burgess COMMENTARY

Are we really making the progress SB is reporting?

Peter Burgess Tue, May 28, 9:56 AM

I have been a reader of SB articles for a very long time ... and I have become more and more aware that essentially the same 'story' is being told over and over again, and the more I think about it the more I am convinced that SB has bought into the corporate PR about sustainability without very much that is tangible to back it up.

During my mainstream career many years ago as a young CFO in the USA I calculated that if all the cost reduction projects that we had implemented had actually produced what they were meant to produce. the company would have substantially negative costs. Now I look at all the good news about sustainability and am coming to much the same conclusion. Corporate PR is very powerful. and is almost exclusively about profit and not much about the other components of the Triple Bottom Line!

I am of the view that without meaningful metrics ... that are believable and are validated in some way ... we are going to delude ourselves that we are making progress, when in fact we are doing nothing of the sort.

Respectfully

Peter Burgess

to Dimitar, me

Hello Peter,

Thank you so much for reaching out and sharing your thoughts and concerns. We really do appreciate it and take it seriously. We truly are a conscientious group at SB and want you to know the following (words from Dimitar Vlahov, Director of Content Development who is included here). Also, if you are in Detroit and would like to talk to either KoAnn, CEO, or Scott, COO of Sustainable Brands, I would be happy to set up a meeting. Or a call in the near future.

We are very much paying attention to metrics and we have a whole event about it, with the following outline of tracks and key topics for New Metrics '19 this November:
  • Rethinking Value Creation & Risk Assessment
    • - Purposeful Leadership and Long-term Value Creation
    • - Enterprise Risk Management for the Next Decade
    • - Important Implications of Doughnut Economics
    • - Principles of Regenerative Economics
  • Next-Generation Goals & Targets
    • - Science-based Goals for Carbon, Water, Forests, Soil and More
    • - The Arrival of Social Science-based Goal-setting
    • - Comparing and Contrasting Science-based and Context-based Goals
    • - New Targets for Circularity, Net Neutral and Net Positive Impacts
  • Sustainability Reporting & Investor Relations
    • - The Journey to Integrated Reporting
    • - Trends in Investor Sentiment & Shareholder Activism
