The New Humanitarian Daily Update: The latest from our correspondents in Geneva and around the world

Cyclone Idai aftermath compounds problems for Zimbabwe “Whatever crops that were being grown despite the drought have now been destroyed in the floods.” After the droughts, floods for hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans now in need of urgent food aid.

The New Humanitarian: Local Aid

This week, IRIN became The New Humanitarian. The mission is the same: an independent non-profit newsroom that puts our journalism at the service of the millions of people affected by humanitarian crisis. To mark this move, we’re highlighting some of our core coverage, including this curation of stories that explore locally driven humanitarian action on the front lines of the world’s crises: 'From the ground up: Inside the push to reshape aid'.

The Cheat Sheet will return next week, but we won't leave you without this week's weekend read:

Humanitarian innovation faces rethink as innovators take stock

Four donors have pulled their funding for the Global Alliance for Humanitarian Innovation (GAHI), putting it at risk of closure. GAHI was one of two initiatives announced – with some fanfare – at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. The other, the Geneva-based Global Humanitarian Lab, was dissolved in 2018, but may yet return in a new incarnation. In a new review of the innovation scene, we found some common themes: less “shiny” tech, more structural challenges – and the problems of getting good ideas to scale, battling bureaucracy and inertia need as much attention as gadgets.

Behind the Wire – Migrants in Morocco “Every day, not even one day; every day it's hard.”

The story of African migrants trying to reach Europe doesn’t begin or end with Libya. Thousands try to cross each year from Morocco into the heavily guarded Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. The chances of success are slim, and last year Spain deported 116 migrants who made it across the border. Hear migrants’ stories in this audio slideshow from our archives. IN THE NEWS

Nowruz tragedy in Mosul

Dozens of people drowned when a ferry overturned in Iraq. The vessel was going from Mosul to an island amusement park in the Tigris river. Media reports say the boat was crowded with families celebrating the Nowruz New Year festival, and the river level was high. Mosul was heavily damaged in the coalition campaign to oust so-called Islamic State and rebuilding has a long way to go, as this report examines.
