Addressing Social Needs beyond Material Circularity ... Circular Economy 2.0 In Practice #13: Regen Network – using blockchain to create the balance sheet for earth

Burgess COMMENTARY
I very much like this initiative based on what has been described. It seems to have some of the characteristics that are embedded in the TrueValueMetrics.org initiative ... further along in some ways, but not all ways. My preference is a program that embraces ALL the capitals, and ALL the actors/activities/etc. The concept of rewarding social and environmental benefits being generated using tokens is a very important part of this initiative and perhaps its most interesting aspect. Good information! PeterB http://truevaluemetrics.org

Circular Economy 2.0 In Practice #13: Regen Network – using blockchain to create the balance sheet for earth

Utilizing distributed ledger technology, Regen Network aims to create a systemic, multi-stakeholder, market-driven solution to verify and reward regenerative agricultural outcomes.

Social Challenges: One of the largest GHG emmiters, agriculture sector releases up to 12 gigatons of CO2 equivalent per year. Also, the current degenerative agricultural system results in severe soil loss, an estimated $400 billion cost to the society.

Network Model: Regen Foundation will spearhead the scientific research and infrastructure development to realize Regen Ledger, a domain-specific blockchain using native token XRN. The system’s ultimate goal is to use smart contracting capacity to reward regenerating agricultural activities. To achieve this, Regen Ledger provides three frameworks – Ecological State Protocols (define and verify the state or change of state on a piece of land), Ecological Contracts (allow stakeholders to fund and reward the positive change in ecological state), and Supply Protocols (tie ecological state into supply chains).

Circular Economy 2.0 aims to design both waste and poverty out of our system and proposes 3 “Just Circular Principles,” on top of the 3 main circular principles, viewing humans as integral resources to Optimise Circular Value. (#OCV)

1. Equity Principle
The network will enable every stakeholder, especially those with fewer resources such as small farmers and non-profits, to be able to join the market and contribute to the regeneration of earth’s ecosystems.

2. Access Principle
The network will open up significant opportunities for users to design business services around the framework, contributing to the long-term economic advancement incorporating the planetary health.

3. Ability Principle
In addition to the potential job creation, the framework’s open-source, decentralized characteristics will encourage the development of human capacity to value the relationship between human and nature and develop solutions.Show less

TrueValueMetrics (TVM) is an Open Source / Open Knowledge initiative. It has been funded by family and friends. TVM is a 'big idea' that has the potential to be a game changer. The goal is for it to remain an open access initiative.
