President Obama and Prime Minister Modi https://youtu.be/hZ3p70S8t-k The White House The White House Subscribed751,606 Add to Share More 18,056 views 271 36 Transcript English 0:00President Obama: Well, it is a great pleasure to welcome 0:03back my friend Prime Minister Modi and the 0:08Indian delegation to the Oval Office. 0:20I still have fond memories of being honored by the 0:27Prime Minister's invitation to participate in Republic 0:31Day celebrations in India and the incredible 0:34hospitality and warmth that was shown by the people of 0:37India during our visit. 0:51As the world's two largest democracies and countries 0:57with strong bonds between our peoples, our businesses, 1:03our scientific and educational communities, 1:06it's natural that the United States and India have 1:10deepened and broadened our partnership across a whole 1:13range of issues. 1:22In Paris, the joining of forces between India and the 1:29United States helped to forge a historic agreement 1:32that can effectively deal with climate change. 1:37And we discussed how we can as quickly as possible bring 1:44the Paris agreement into force, how we can make sure 1:48that the climate financing that's necessary for India 1:53to be able to embark on the bold vision for solar energy 1:59and clean energy that Prime Minister Modi has laid out 2:02can be accomplished. 2:03And the agreements and memoranda that we reached I 2:09think reflect the seriousness with which both 2:11of us take the climate change issue. 2:31We discussed, in addition, the progress that we've made 2:35around civil nuclear energy. 2:39And I indicated our support for India becoming part of 2:44the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the abilities for 2:49technologies that are critical to India's 2:51development and prosperity being available. 2:55And we also discussed in that same context our 2:59important work together around the nonproliferation 3:02of nuclear materials and technologies that could end 3:08up falling into the wrong hands. 3:10And I very much appreciated the Prime Minister's very 3:14effective interventions and participation in our Nuclear 3:16Security Summit. 3:42Of course, a key priority for both of us is how to 3:47promote economic prosperity and opportunity and poverty 3:52alleviation for our people. 3:54And we continue to discuss a wide range of areas where we 3:59can cooperate more effectively in order to 4:02promote jobs, to promote investment, to promote 4:05trade, and to promote greater opportunities for 4:11our people -- particularly young people -- in both of 4:14our countries. 4:19And we discussed both towards the end of our 4:54meeting, as well as -- and intend to discuss during our 4:58lunch meeting important regional and security 5:01issues, because India and the United States have a 5:06shared vision of peace, of democracy, of countries 5:12resolving conflicts diplomatically rather than 5:15through war. 5:19And when we work together on the international stage, we 5:22can make significant progress not only on 5:26traditional security challenges, but also new 5:29security challenges like cybersecurity that are going 5:33to be increasingly important in the 21st century. 6:03So again, I want to thank my friend Prime Minister Modi 6:08for his leadership. 6:09I know that whenever he visits, it is a source of 6:13great pride and excitement not only for the people of 6:16India, but the remarkable Indian American community 6:21here in the United States that are a symbol and a 6:27testament of the deep bonds of friendship and family 6:31that exist between our two countries. 7:42Prime Minister Modi: (As interpreted.) I, too, would 7:45like to thank my very close friend, President Obama, for 7:47this meeting today. 7:48We are meeting once again. 7:51And I'm also grateful to the Congress of the United 7:55States for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to 7:57address them tomorrow. 7:59We've had a discussion on a range of issues, and I think 8:03it's not just the diplomatic strength of these 8:05discussions, but also the friendliness, the strength 8:09that comes out of that that is very important. 9:11Both India and the United States have been working 9:14together, and we will continue to do so. 9:17What we have seen over the last two years is that India 9:21and the United States have been cooperating on issues 9:24that are of global concern. 9:26And we've been working shoulder to shoulder to 9:28achieve results that are of benefit to the entire world. 9:31Whether we're talking about nuclear security, global 9:33warming, the concerns with terrorism, the Paris 9:37agreement -- the initiative that was taken there -- we 9:39have been working shoulder to shoulder. 9:41And I feel proud that we are not just two friends and two 9:45countries that are working together, we are proud of 9:48the leadership role that we have taken on, and we will 9:50continue to do so. 10:24Today, we've had a discussion, as I said, on a 10:26range of issues. 10:27We've spoken about taking our economic relationship to 10:30new heights. 10:31We talked about technical support. 10:33We have spoken about the energy sector, about funding 10:36-- financing for clean energy. 10:38We've spoken about cybersecurity and the fact 10:41that India also leads a role as far as the Internet is 10:44concerned. 10:45So these are all a range of issues that we've had very 10:47good discussions on. 11:25India is a young country. 11:27We have a population of 800 million who are below 35 11:30years of age. 11:32And, in fact, the United States is well aware of the 11:35talent that India has. 11:37We and the United States can work together to bring 11:41forward this talent and use it for the benefit of 11:43mankind, to use it for the benefit of innovations, and 11:46to use it to achieve new progress and touch new 11:49heights. 11:50We will continue to do so in the future, too. 12:34India has made a name for itself as the 12:36fastest-growing economy in the world. 12:39And India and the United States are two of the 12:42world's biggest democracies. 12:44Both countries need to widen their cooperation, the scope 12:47of their cooperation, and find new areas to cooperate 12:50in that will assist in finding solutions for the 12:53world but also for the developing nations of the 12:55world. 13:18And by that time, I expect that we would have moved 13:22Climate justice is also an issue that we will 13:24be taking up. 13:42We also have the MTCR, we have the Nuclear 13:44Suppliers Group. 13:46And the help and support that my friend President 13:50Obama has extended is something that I will always 13:52cherish and remember. 13:56Once again, I'd like to thank you very much.
