Gmail Peter Burgess CISA delayed! 1 message Evan from FFTF Fri, Aug 7, 2015 at 11:21 AM Reply-To: info@fightforthefuture.org To: peterbnyc@gmail.com Hey, Here’s the deal: yesterday the Senate delayed its expected vote on CISA, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act that would let companies share your private information––like emails and medical records––with the government.1 The delay is good news; but it's a delay, not a victory. We just bought some precious extra time to fight CISA, but we need to use it to go big like we did with SOPA or this bill will still pass. Even if we stop it in September, they’ll try again after that. We need to be ready to fight tooth and nail on this bill and the next one after it. The truth is that right now, things are looking pretty grim. Democrats and Republicans have been holding closed-door meetings to work out a deal to pass CISA quickly when they return from recess.2 But we’ve been changing the game too. The #FaxBigBrother campaign that Fight for the Future members helped fund flooded Senate offices with more than 6 million faxes against CISA, shifting the narrative and generating a flurry of media coverage from CBS News, The Guardian, and TIME Magazine Senators were talking about the 6 million faxes on the Senate floor, and I even went on NPR’s All Things Considered to talk about CISA, reaching millions of people in just one night.3 But bills like CISA (and CISPA before it) will keep coming back from the dead unless we organize a massive public outcry that makes this type of legislation so politically toxic they won’t bring it back up for years, like we did with SOPA. That’s exactly what we’re planning. We’re going to start going after all the biggest Internet companies and making it clear that if they don’t speak out against CISA, they can’t be trusted. For now though, we’ve stalled and delayed CISA and bills like it nearly half a dozen times, but this month could be our last chance to stop it for good.
