Africa-UK Connections in Practice - New Approaches for 2015
Saturday, 10 January 2015 EVENT ... London, United Kingdom This event brings together people from the UK and from English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. Our keynote speaker is Professor Tim Unwin Secretary General (formerly Chief Executive Officer) of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), Emeritus Professor of Geography and UNESCO Chair in ICT4D at Royal Holloway, University of London. Our emphasis is on how things have changed (and are changing with increasing rapidity) now that communication is easier. This is because of the Internet, mobile phones, social media and such-like. We are taking a long view, recognising that 2015 is half way between the turn of the century and 2030. This is not about hype, or theory, or imaginings. This event is based on the practical projects of guests who are pioneers in the field and it will also draw on the expertise and interests of all participants. The lessons learned through these projects are applicable not just between Africa and UK but in other situations as well.
Reality checks Our initial reality-checks will be based on the relationship between Fantsuam Foundation in rural Nigeria, Dadamac in the UK and the wider community online. This began in 2004 and has been enabled by Zittnet a trail-blazing rural Internet Service Provider at Fantsuam. We will be looking at lessons learned in Dadamac through many years of collaborative projects enabled by weekly UK-Nigeria online meetings, as well as more inclusive monthly online meetings. Dadamac will be represented by John Dada and Pamela McLean. Collaboration, communication and community development We will also look at other UK-Africa collaborations where two-way communication is the key to success. Representatives of various projects will attend as exhibitors and also take part in the group discussions during the day. We'll be looking at barriers to Africa-UK collaboration, and how they can be overcome. We'll consider opportunities and challenges around genuine integrated community development. After-Event For participants who are interested in taking forward the lessons of the day in a practical way there will be an “After-Event” at 3.30. This will be an extended tea break to continue discussions with the guest speakers, exhibitors and participants. The after-event is an opportunity to reflect, to make practical plans, consider how we can help each other, and explore possible collaborations before everyone goes their separate ways.
