Despite an increased awareness of overfishing, the majority of people still know very little about the scale of the destruction being wrought on the oceans.

Peter Burgess ... Founder/CEO at TrueValueMetrics ... formerly international business and development consultant and corporate CFO

Part of my career was spent in the international fishing industry. The story told by this video is important ... but there is nobody in leadership anywhere that is taking much notice. There were some in the 1970s and 1980s who were saying much the same as is documented in this video, but immediate profit was more powerful than anything to do with a sustainable industry.

This is one of the reasons why I am so passionate about the importance of metrics of business performance that take into account impact on people and planet as well as just the impact on profit.

Specifically, I was the CFO of a company operating in the shrimp fishing industry worldwide. We wanted to be making profit year after year after year. This meant we had a deep interest in the shrimp resource coming back year after year after year, and we helped to develop sustainable catch limits so that this would happen.

The so called distant water fleets tended to operate on the basis that we will catch as much as we can before someone else does. Many of these vessels operated in waters where they were able to do what they pleased, and if local fisheries protection initiatives were in play, it was unusual for anything of significance to happen. Fishing vessels from Europe fishing in waters off the African coast did whatever they wanted ... and to a large extent still do. It is a disgrace.

Despite an increased awareness of overfishing, the majority of people still know very little about the scale of the destruction being wrought on the oceans. This film presents an unquestionable case for why overfishing needs to end and shows that there is still an opportunity for change. Through reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, fisheries ministers and members of the European Parliament, MEPs, can end overfishing.
