Project Objectives:
(1) Improve the understanding of the barriers to sustainability within South Africa’s small-scale fishing communities. This would include developing a better understanding of the value of the marine resources targeted by small-scale fisheries as well understanding the current value-chains associated with these resources.
(2) Develop a market mechanism, which is both environmentally sustainable and socially equitable, to incentivise the long-term recovery of both small-scale fisheries and the integrity of small-scale fishing communities.
(3) Facilitate the successful implementation of the small-scale fisheries policy and the development of effective co-management structures to ensure the buy-in of small-scale fishing communities to integrated ocean use.
(4) Position WWF as a credible organisation within the small-scale sector, both to the small-scale fishing communities and to organisations and government departments working with this sector.
