Background
Summary
My name is Joyce Meng, and I currently reside in New York City. After receiving a Rhodes Scholarship, I graduated from Oxford University with a MSc in Economics for Development and a MSc in Financial Economics. I am deeply interested in microfinance and international development, with particular focus on social entrepreneurship and private financial sector development. To this end, I co-founded Givology (www.givology.org) and Generation Enterprise (www.generationenterprise.org).
Now, I'm pursuing a career in investing in the city. To learn more about my background and interests, as well as view my blog, please visit my website at: www.joycemeng.com

CEO and Co-Founder
Givology
March 2008 – Present (5 years 8 months)
Givology (www.givology.org) is an online giving marketplace for education founded by University of Pennsylvania students (now alumni) to empower individual donors to connect with students and schools in need. By leveraging the Internet to support student scholarships and education projects through our network of grassroots partnerships, Givology links interested donors to community-driven initiatives in the developing world, such as teacher training, library construction, textbook purchases, among other activities. Notably, Givology makes giving easy, transparent, and rewarding, allowing any donor to track his or her impact through an online account to receive regular updates. Givology also emphasizes blogging, pen pal relations, dialogue about education delivery, and 1x1 connections with our students and projects. Our philosophy is “Give to Learn, Learn to Give” – every person has a responsibility to world and has something powerful to offer.
As a 100% volunteer-driven organization, Givology pioneers a new model of “crowd-sourcing” philanthropy to make the largest impact at the lowest cost. We have raised over $390,000 to support over 3,100 students in 28 countries through 48 grassroots partnerships. Our organization has 6,000+ supporters on Facebook, Linked-in, and Twitter, 3,440+ registered donors, 17 chapters started at universities, high schools, and various cities, 30 core team members and 90 volunteers globally. We received the Intelius Award for “Best Student-Run Social Enterprise”, were rated a “Top Education Non-profit” by GreatNonprofits, won a significant Google Grant Award, in addition to being recognized by the Kairos Society as an innovative entrepreneurial venture. As we formed new connections through social media, we were extremely pleased to be featured in Nicholas Kristof’s inspiring book Half the Sky, Vivanista, Knowledge@Wharton, Philadelphia Inquirer, MTVAct, among other print and media sources.

At the heart of Generation Enterprise is a unique business model that delivers impact in two phases:
1. A fellowship phase in which Generation Enterprise Fellows (former street youth) learn business skills on the job as employees in a community business, and
2. An entrepreneurship phase in which high-performing Fellows pitch their own business ideas and receive asset-equivalent microfinance loans and mentorship
Once their loans are repaid, Generation Enterprise Fellows become independent business owners -- and local employers.
