Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess

I am enjoying surfing around the DOMO website and blog, and I can relate to a lot of the stories being told. My guess is that you may have found a 'sweet spot' opportunity for IT to add value to business simply by getting the right information in front of the business decision makers in an efficient way.

But maybe there is another 'sweet spot' that you could include in your product offerings. Most of the effort of a modern organization goes into making more revenues and more profits so that the company's stock price will go up and top executives and investors will be pleased. This is well and good, but the metrics being used ignore the so-called 'externalities' ... the impact on people and planet, which are increasingly being recognized as of important.

Maybe DOMO's is already in this space ... but I have not seen any evidence of it. I believe the time has come for some radical reform of the metrics used to manage economic activity so that the outcomes are good for investors, for people and for planet. People should be seeing improved quality of life. There should be reduced stress on the planet both as regards depletion of resources and degradation of the environment (land, water and atmosphere). Optimization of performance should be not only about profit, but also about the impact on people and planet as well.

Maybe I can help
