My passion is to have a definite and real impact on public health and to improve the methodology for assessing the public health impact of vector control tools and strategies. Public policy depends on reductions of disease transmission and burden, so we have to make the link between entomological and epidemiological endpoints. Experience Consultant Stelma Consulting August 2013 – Present (3 months) Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationSenior Program Officer Vector Biology Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation May 2005 – May 2013 (8 years 1 month)Seatle, Washington, USA • Led initiatives on malaria vector control, dengue fever and integrated vector management and shared responsibility for modeling work in malaria. Collaborated with global public health leaders at the World Health Organization and other multilateral organizations, public health and academic experts, technical experts, public health program managers and commercial partners. Envisioned success in overlapping spheres of influence, and devised broad implementation plans to achieve success. • Supported development of new paradigm vector control tools, including spatial repellents, sugar-feeding and attractive lethal oviposition traps through product development grants and field ecology studies to establish the metrics for their evaluation identification of new paradigms for delivering active ingredients to vector insects and proof of principle studies for first-in-field evaluations of novel vector control tools • Supported development of new contact toxins for use in IRS or LLIN technologies, through creation of the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC). • Supported development of global system for regulatory review and quality assurance for pesticide products, evaluation of insecticide resistance and impact of various vector control tools on disease transmission. • Developed transmission assessment methodologies, through modeling and analysis of disease burden data, supported creation of a business model which supported distribution of consumer products for vector control, and product development projects. National Institutes of HealthProgram Officer Vector Biology/Tropical Medicine National Institutes of Health August 1990 – May 2005 (14 years 10 months)Bethesda, Maryland, USA • Supported and managed research portfolio, promoted development of medical entomology research applications and protocols in under-represented areas, and ensured compliance with rules and regulations for clinical studies, publication and patenting, environmental impact, data sharing and biosafety. • Maintained cognizance of related research: basic entomology, ecology/ immunology of arthropod vectors and interactions with pathogen and/or human host. Coordinated support for sequencing and assembly/annotation of Anopheles gambiae genome. • Managed ten commercial partnership awards for applied and translational research involving industry, academic and government scientists. Spurred development of interventions with immediate application to public health including novel active ingredients and operationalization of novel disease control strategies. • Supported young scientists by providing advice, identifying their projects for special consideration, as appropriate, and recommending them for leadership positions. • Maintained active, proactive relationships with industry and collaborated to develop consensus about effective vector control, and the best ways to strengthen. Laid the groundwork for creation of public-private partnership for new public health insecticides. • Coordinated with national and international research funders, and represented Institute on Invasive Species Council, Interagency Consortium for Public Health Pesticides, OSTP review of biotechnology regulation, WHO Global Consortium for Development of Pesticides for Public Health, WHO Special Program of Research and Development on Tropical Diseases (WHO/TDR) Molecular Entomology Program; USAIDAAAS Science and Diplomacy Fellow - Global Health USAID September 1988 – August 1990 (2 years)Washington D.C.
