Burgess COMMENTARY | ||
Open PDF ... Whitepaper ... Mobile M4M Payments for LatinAmerica Thank you for sending me the White Paper ... and this prompts a whole chain of questions. From the perspective of the bank, their is a vision of a new banking business opportunity. But what actually is the banking opportunity? Is it not to sell something to the people using the service, and in the process make profit for the bank. It appears that Scotiabank and Citi Banamex have identified a meaningful profit opportunity to the banks. There are others who will also profit from having a more convenient way of paying for goods being purchased ... the merchants and the manufacturers/distributors like Coke.(page 9). Everything in this business model is about getting more of the customers' money into the hands of the banks, the merchants and the manufacturers/distributors ... to get the customers to be a bigger consumers. Without something substantial being done in parallel to make it possible for the consumer to be a bigger earner, what is being described is merely a part of a steep slippery slide to economic catastrophe ... something that has been happening slowly for a long time around the world, and not much talked about, because the facts are very disturbing. Somehow, the amazing potential of mobile communications needs to be used to do something for the customer's earning power. Until this is done, the system as a whole will continue to get deeper and deeper into trouble. There are ways out of this mess, but I do not see any being described in this White Paper, and I am not hearing anything of substance coming out of bank leadership, even though it should be obvious that they have a huge potential for good, but only when they work to mobilize resources for social valuadd and not merely for business and investor profit.It is time to develop and deploy Capitalism 2.0 and use more meaningful metrics about things that really matter.
