Edward Jackson is a faculty member in the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada, where he is cross-appointed to the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Institute of African Studies. He is also Senior Research Fellow at the Carleton Centre for Community Innovation. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Associate Dean (Research, Graduate Affairs and Faculty Development) in the Faculty of Public Affairs at Carleton University. In this role he chaired university committees on community engagement and partnership. Currently, he concentrates his teaching and research at Carleton on project management, program evaluation, local governance, regional development, social enterprise, social finance, community-university partnerships, and foreign-aid policy Dr. Jackson has advised a wide range of organizations, including AUCC, CLC, CIDA, IDRC, the McConnell Foundation, the Trillium Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, SSHRC and the World Bank. He has worked in every region of Canada and in 50 other countries around the world. The author or editor of numerous academic and professional publications, he is a frequent speaker at conferences. Dr. Jackson also serves as President of E. T. Jackson and Associates Ltd., an award-winning management consulting firm. A member of the McLeod Group, he is a frequent blogger with The Huffington Post Canada, Embassy Magazine and The Mark, and is also active on Twitter. Experience Senior Research Fellow Carleton Centre for Community Innovation July 2010 – Present (2 years 10 months)Ottawa The Centre is a leading source of action-oriented knowledge on impact investing and social finance, social enterprise, community economic development, Aboriginal development and governance, and community-university partnerships. I serve as Principal Investigator of Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement, a major, SSHRC-funded campus-community partnership project active in poverty reduction, community food security, community environmental sustainability, and violence against women. I also lead research projects involving social impact assessments of social enterprises and community-based organizations, and on strategies for leveraging the economic power of universities to create jobs and sustainable communities, with a focus on mobilizing the capital of universities to invest in affordable housing, urban revitalization and other community projects. I served as founding Director (1993-2003) and Chair (2004-2010) of the Centre. Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Affairs), Faculty of Public Affairs Carleton University July 2007 – June 2010 (3 years) This role involved building research capacity across a Faculty comprising 11 academic units, nearly 200 faculty members, 7,000 students (including 1,000 graduate students) and 20 research centres. I chaired the Faculty Research Committee and numerous Faculty project groups. I also served as a member of the university-wide Committee of Associate Deans of Research and of the Graduate Studies Faculty Board, and chaired both the university-wide Initiative for Community-University Engagement and the senior management Working Group on Partnerships. Co-Founder and Principal Community Economic Development Technical Assistance Program 1997 – 2008 (11 years) A joint venture of the McConnell Foundation and Carleton University, the Community Economic Development Technical Assistance Program was a pan-Canadian grant-making initiative that funded more than 450 local initiatives, built a database of 600 technical assistance specialists, and provided conference and research support to Canada's CED movement. A member of many CED and social economy sector bodies, CEDTAP itself was financed by the Foundation, Bell Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Royal Bank, Power Corporation, Western Economic Diversification and DEC Quebec.
