Background
Summary
I am an well-being economist and entrepreneur specializing in designing, building, measuring and operating communities and businesses of wellbeing and happiness. In 2007, I authored the best-selling, award-winning book The Economics of Happiness: Building Genuine Wealth, which is a guidebook for achieving what we all want: a good life, meaningful work and enduring happiness. I developed the Genuine Wealth Model as a practical tool that helps businesses and communities develop flourishing economies of well-being and happiness. I have advised governments, business and individuals in Canada, the US, Austria, China, The Netherlands, Bhutan, and more recently Tahiti in developing communities and economies of well-being. For the past 10 years I founded and taught corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship at the University of Alberta, School of Business. In May 2012, I joined Robert McGarvey, Dominic Mishio and Bill Craig to form a cooperative business enterprise we call 'Genuine Wealth' with a mission to design and build communities and enterprises of well-being and happiness, based on the Genuine Wealth Model.
Experience
Co-founder and Partner
Genuine Wealth Inc.
May 2012 – Present (1 year)Edmonton
Our mission at Genuine Wealth is to design, build and help operate the new economy of well-being based on the Genuine Wealth Model. We help assess and optimize their wealth, health and happiness. We believe that wealth is being redefined back to it's original 13th Century Old English meaning: 'the conditions of well-being.' We believe 'well-being' will ultimately transcend profit and GDP (gross domestic product) as the ultimate measure of progress and what we call the 'well-being return on investment' of of the five capital assets of your organization or community. We help individuals, households, businesses, communities and nations discover their Genuine Wealth by measuring what matters to a more meaningful and flourishing life. Genuine Wealth Inc. was formed as a unique cooperative business enterprise with my colleagues Dominic Mishio, Robert McGarvey and Bill Craig. We believe we are the first model of a Genuine (G) Corporation where our success is measured in terms of maximizing well-being and happiness for our own lives, our families and neighbourhoods.

Gabriola Island, British Columbia
May 10, 2007
We all know that money can’t buy you love…or happiness. But we have been living our lives as though the accumulation of wealth is the key to our dreams. North Americans have never been wealthier, but over the past 50 years our increasing prosperity has hardly made a dent on our happiness while many conditions of well-being are in decline.
