For the rich and powerful that control the global economy, these metrics serve them well, but for society as a whole the outcomes are less than satisfactory. The idea that there is massive unemployment of educated youth around the world is obscene, as is the idea that prosperity is only achieved by economic growth and more and more consumption of resources and pollution of the planet.

I argue for meaningful metrics that (1) relate to every component of the economy and society; (2) are used both by organizations and by communities; (3) have utilty at the micro level where people make decisions; and (4) have more in common with accountancy and arithmetic than economics and statistics.

The good news is that there are many initiatives that aim to change the metrics. The bad news is that the world is still dominated by the terrible trio. TrueValueMetrics (TVM) is building on what others have done so the same framework of data show state, progress and performance (1) for individual people; (2) for communities; (3) for specific business operations; and (4) for corporate entities as a whole.
