Aaron Maniam | National Youth Council

Aaron Maniam is a member of the National Youth Council (NYC), Singapore’s apex policy-making body for youth issues. He is an Advisor for “Be the Change”, a national public consultation exercise for youths, and chairs the Advisory Panel for the “NYC Academy”, an idea he mooted in late-2009 to build Singapore’s youth sector. Aaron is also adjunct faculty at National University of Singapore’s University Scholars Programme, where he teaches Leadership in a Complex World. He also chairs the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA)’s Youth Club, and was President of Mendaki Club, a group of professionals that conducts upliftment programmes for talented Muslim youth.

Aaron was identified one of 25 “Asia 21 Fellows” by Asia Society in 2008 and named a Richard C. Holbrooke Fellow / Next Generation Policy Leader in an initiative to promote emerging foreign policy voices. In January 2011, Aaron was one of eight named an “Outstanding Young Singaporean” by the Orchid Jayceettes, a local chapter of the Junior Chamber International.

Abhijit Ray | Unitus Capital

Abhijit started his career in SBI in 1993. He moved to SIDBI in December 1994, served for more than 11 years in various capacities which, inter-alia, include providing finance MFIs and SMEs in Kolkata, Gangtok and Hyderabad. As a founding member of SIDBI Foundation for Micro Credit, Abhijit formulated policies, developed products, implemented plans for development of MF sector, rated MFIs using CAMEL tools, appraised and facilitated debt to more than 50 MFIs and arranged grant funding for 35 MFIs for capacity building.

Abhijit joined Unitus Inc in 2006 to develop capital markets practice for MFI and closed 6 guarantee transactions, arranged portal based funding for 2 MFIs and led a two member team in formulating Rural MF strategy for a Private Bank.

In 2008, Abhijit co-founded Unitus Capital. He successfully closed 39 debt & equity deals till date (including NCDs) totalling US$ 631 mn, which includes SKS IPO, 1st FII investment in NCD of an MFI and 1st rated EWS pool sale of a start up MFI. Abhijit co-authored articles on microfinance in international journals. Abhijit is regularly quoted in leading national dailies in India. He has been a panellist in many conferences on Microfinance and impact investing.

Abhijit is an Economics Graduate of Kolkata University and a Certified Associate of IIBF, Mumbai. He attended School of Applied Microfinance (SAM) 2005 in Kenya and Strategic Leadership in Microfinance at Harvard Business School in USA in 2008.

Al Njoo | Nations Petroleum

Al Njoo is director of Nations Petroleum, Canadian oil and gas (exploration and production) group, and Merrill Lynch Indonesia. Together with Merrill Lynch, he promoted the privatization effort of the government in the 1990s. Before going into business, Mr. Njoo was a corporate banker with the Chase Bank in Jakarta and Hong Kong.

He is a promoter for better education and healthcare in South East Asia, building east-west institutional links, combining east-west approaches, and the use of technology and the internet for higher productivity and cost efficient distribution for learning/education and cultural enrichment. During the early 1990s during the development of the Indonesian capital market (stock exchange), Mr. Njoo established IPAF, the institute to train CFA professionals working with the US ICFA (chartered financial analysts). He has sponsored the building of new schools in Nias, an Indonesian tsunami-destroyed island off the west coast of Sumatra. He has supported gall bladder orphan cancer research and ongoing scholarships to Asian students for PhD studies and research at John Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is a member of the World Presidents Organization (WPO), a global CEO board member of the Wharton Fellows, and a trustee of Sumber Waras Hospital in Jakarta.

Alex Nicholls | Oxford University

Alex Nicholls is the first tenured lecturer in social entrepreneurship appointed at the University of Oxford. His research interests range across several key areas within social innovation and entrepreneurship, including: the nexus of relationships between accounting, accountability, and governance; public and social policy contexts; social investment; and Fair Trade. Nicholls has published more than forty peer-reviewed academic journal papers, book chapters and articles, including several in Financial Times Top 30 journals. He has also published five books, including the best-selling and most cited academic books on social entrepreneurship and Fair Trade. His 2009 paper on social investment won the Best Paper Award (Entrepreneurship) at the British Academy of Management. In 2010, Nicholls edited a Special Edition of Entrepreneurship, Theory and Practice on social entrepreneurship – the first time a top-tier management journal had recognized the topic in this way. He is also the General Editor of the Skoll Working Papers series and the Editor of the Journal of Social Entrepreneurship.

Anurag Agrawal | Intellecap

Anurag is co-founder of Intellecap and part of the group’s senior management team directly responsible for the business units within the Intellecap group. He incubated the investment banking practice of Intellecap with specific focus on assisting early and growth-stage multiple bottom-line enterprises access capital in the form of equity investments. He has worked with several socially oriented investors assisting them in identifying suitable impact investment opportunities and facilitating investment transactions into such entities.

Anurag has worked with leading microfinance institutions in India and helped many of these institutions in their fund raising efforts. Anurag has also been part of the pioneering team conceptualizing and executing the concept of franchising of microfinance across India. This program has now been successfully hived off as IntelleCash, a fully owned subsidiary of Intellecap. Anurag manages some of the key client and investor relationships for Intellecap and also represents the management team on the Board of the company.

Armin Bauer | Asian Development Bank

Dr. Armin Bauer is Principal Economist in the Regional and Sustainable Development Department (RSDD) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). RSDD is a think tank department on sector and cross cutting thematic issues, and Armin Bauer is heading the poverty and inclusive growth team in the Poverty Reduction, Gender, and Social Development Division (RSGS).

Mr. Bauer works with ADB since 1995, mainly on cross-cutting themes (social policy), sectors (transport, rural development, urban development, finance and public policies, health and social protection) and on country strategies. Between 1991 and 2001 he was in ADB’s Strategy and Policy Department, developing – among others – ADB’s poverty reduction strategy. He also managed various poverty funds. Mr. Bauer is now dealing mainly with knowledge work, strategic advice, and operational support for topics such as the environments of the poor, social impact of the global recession, inclusive growth, labor markets in Asia and the Pacific, social protection, impact investments of private sector companies and funds, and ex-ante poverty and social impact analysis of projects and country programs.

One of Mr. Bauer’s recent initiatives is a cooperation with ADB’s Private Sector Department on establishing inclusive business funds for various Asian countries to facilitate private sector investments with systemic poverty impact on low income groups as laborers, suppliers, distributors and consumers of public goods. The initiative comprises (a) market scoping studies in 10 Asian countries on inclusive business at the base of the pyramid, (b) the development of an inclusive business impact assessment tool, and (c) the possible establishment of investments funds for inclusive business in cooperation with development partners.

Mr. Bauer, a German national, has more than 20 years of development experience. He has a PhD in development economics, a M.A. in Political Economy (1987), and a BA in Administrative Science. Prior to working at ADB, Dr. Bauer was with the German technical assistance agency (GIZ) in 1991-1995, the German development bank (KfW) in 2003-2006, and grassroots NGOs in India in the 1980s.

Asif Saleh | BRAC

Asif is the Director of Communications and Social Innovation Lab at BRAC and BRAC International.

He served as an Executive Director at Goldman Sachs until 2008 until he decided to return to Bangladesh and work in the development sector. He started DriVen partnership, a social enterprise, that worked with Microenterprises. Over a career span of 12 years with Goldman, Sachs in New York and London, he served in various management roles in Equities and Asset Managetment Division of Goldman, Sachs. His previous work experiences were in Glaxo Wellcome, NorTel and IBM. Asif is also the founder of Drishtipat, a global organization focusing on human and economic rights of Bangldeshis. In 2001, he started the then Internet based Drishtipat (Take Notice ) which became an umbrella of concerned diaspora expatriates working on social development. Currently it has 9 chapters in the USA, Australia, UK, Canada and Bangladesh.

Asif is the co-founder of Drishtipat Writers’ Collective. He writes regularly for leading dailies in Bangladesh and in international magazines on society, politics, development, entrepreneurship and diaspora centric issues. His write ups have been published in Guardian, Himal, Daily Star, New Age etc. He has also been featured in CNN and Al Jazeera English.

On his most recent role, he served as a policy specialist for the UNDP funded project Access to Information Programme (A2i) based at the Prime Minister’s Office and facilitated various ICT initiatives for development sector. Some of the notable policy initiatives included facilitation of partnership between government and the banks on branchless banking, nationwide broadband connectivity etc.

Asif was recognized for his work by Asia Society though their Asia 21 program, a program to recognize young leaders from Asian countries, in 2008. He also has been recognized by Bangladeshi American Foundation for his achievments in 2007. Asif has a Bachelors in Computer Science and an MBA in management from NYU Stern School of Business.

Bart Édes | Asian Development Bank

Bart W. Édes is Director of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB’s) Poverty Reduction, Gender, and Social Development Division, and Chairman of ADB’s 220-member Social Development and Poverty Community of Practice. The division provides quality assurance, policy guidance, and technical support to ADB operations on education, gender equity, health, inclusive growth, poverty trends, social dimensions of climate change, and social protection in Asia and the Pacific. The division also generates and shares knowledge and good practice, and explores ways to harness the power of the market to address social and environmental challenges through base of the pyramid approaches and social entrepreneurship.

In previous ADB assignments, Mr. Édes oversaw work on stakeholder participation and civil society engagement, and implemented the bank’s policy on disclosure of information.

Between 1994 and 2000, Mr. Édes managed communications at SIGMA, a joint initiative of the European Union and the OECD providing support on public governance reform to countries in transition. In earlier roles, Mr. Édes has worked as a journalist, policy analyst, and specialist on international trade and foreign direct investment. He has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from Georgetown University.

Ben Pwee | I-deo

Benjamin is an experienced business consultant, coach and trainer, specializing in business development, corporate strategy, strategic planning, organizational re-design, business process improvement, and cross-cultural management in the Asian region. His other expertise area is in the area of strategic non-profit management advisory for governmental and non-governmental, charity and non-profit, as well as social, welfare, community service and public education organizations in the areas of organizational development, corporate growth, cause marketing and branding, PR, donor development and fund-raising.

Benjamin has over twenty years of experience working in the Asia-Pacific region with various private businesses, state-owned enterprises, governmental and civic agencies at national and local levels. He was formerly a Singapore Government Overseas Merit Scholar, a senior Administrative Service Officer and career diplomat with the Singapore Government Foreign Service (responsible for political and economic affairs of the Greater China and Southeast Asian regions), and with the Singapore Government Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters (responsible for joint planning and organizational development). He was also formerly the Executive Director for Medical Services International, a global international healthcare professional service organization with extensive involvements and presence worldwide. He has also held a number of other key leadership, operational and advisory positions involved with developing business growth in Greater China and Southeast Asia, and has personally handled a wide range of frontline business negotiations in the region.

He has also consulted for and advised a number of key corporate firms and non-profit organisations in strengthening their internal organizational capabilities, and consolidating and developing their business, operations and interests in Asia.

In addition, he also regularly conducts extensive corporate training for senior-level executives from different countries and sectors to improve personal and corporate performance. Such training includes top-level executives of international and Fortune 500 MNCs in the Asia-Pacific region, senior executives of national and local governments in Asia, as well as CEOs and Board Directors of non-profit and non-governmental organizations.

Benjamin’s list of clients for whom he has serviced and consulted for include: Bayer, Tyco Healthcare, Covidien, Quintiles, Johnson & Johnson, Philips Healthcare, Victorinox, Thomson Multimedia, Bank of East Asia, Epson, Canon, AIG, ING, Ericsson, Panasonic, Hitachi, Matsushita, the Hong Kong Government’s Hospital Authority, Social Work Department and Labour Department, the Singapore Government’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports, Health Science Authority, Blood Bank of Singapore, as well as a range of other non-profit, governmental, government-related and non-governmental organizations in China, Hong Kong and Singapore including Medicines Sans Frontiers, Singapore Heart Foundation, and the Singapore Scout Association.

Benjamin is highly multi-lingual and multi-cultural. He is originally from Singapore, graduated with a BA and MA from Cambridge University, UK, and has done further executive training at Harvard Business School in the USA. He has also been trained in organizational learning by MIT’s Peter Senge team, in emergency planning by UK’s Emergency Planning College, and in finance and accounting by UK’s Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA). He has lived and worked in Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.

His former and current other appointments and involvements include being a part-time appointed member of the Hong Kong Government’s Central Policy Unit, Special Assistant to the Anglican Bishop of Singapore’s Office, and Assistant Chief Commissioner (Partnerships) of the Singapore Scout Association.

Benjamin speaks, consults, coaches and trains in fluent English, Mandarin (Putonghua) and Cantonese. He is married with three children and is based in Singapore.

Bernard Fung | Credit Suisse

Bernard joined Credit Suisse in January 2011 as Head of Family Office Services Singapore for Private Banking Asia Pacific. He was appointed Head of Family Office Services and Philanthropy Advisory Asia Pacific in December, 2011. In this expanded role, Mr. Fung is responsible for leading the formulation and execution of appropriate family office and philanthropy solutions for local and regional ultra-high-net-worth clients.

Mr. Fung has over 15 years of experience in private investing on behalf of organizations with a long term value added orientation. Since 2005, he was Chief Executive of Innotech Advisors Ltd, the London-based single family office and investment vehicle of Lord Sainsbury of Turville, having joined as its Investment Director in 2003.

Mr. Fung is a Singaporean and holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce, both degrees obtained with the highest honors from the Australian National University.

Bill Burckart | Johns Hopkins

Bill Burckart manages a portfolio of special initiatives for the Center, including the New Frontiers of Philanthropy, the Philanthropication thru Privatization (PtP), and the Social Enterprise Impact Projects. Previously, he was a consultant to Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP), a groundbreaking organization in the field of high engagement philanthropy, where he supported VPP’s assessment of its investment portfolio. Bill also has extensive international experience, having worked for members of the United Kingdom Parliament, and as an editor for BizShanghai, a magazine that covered business information and activities in Shanghai. He received his MA in Public Policy from the Institute for Policy Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and his BA in International Affairs from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.

Chad Bolick | Tides

Chad Bolick is Director of Impact and Innovation at Tides, focusing on research, fundraising, and developing strategic partnerships and services to meet shifting needs within the non-profit and philanthropic sectors. In this position, Bolick directs the work of Tides’ Impact & Innovation department with a focus on developing frameworks for evaluating the impact of Tides’ $150M annual programming.

Prior to joining Tides, Bolick served most recently as the director of global partnership development at BSR, where he designed partnerships among Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), companies, private foundations, and governments at the nexus of international development and business.

Daniel Lin | BlueOcean Capital

Mr Daniel Lin, Executive Director of Blue Ocean Capital Partners Pte Ltd. He is also an Executive Director of Boutique Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory Firm Blue Ocean Capital Partners. In addition, Mr Lin is currently a Non-Executive Director of Singapore-listed companies Nico Steel Holdings Ltd, Ann Aik Ltd and Viking Offshore And Marine Ltd and a Director of Associated Leisure Group of Companies. He is also a member of the Finance Committee with the Singapore Institute of Directors. Mr Lin graduated with an honours degree in law in 2007 from Bristol University, UK.

David Chou | EV World

David Chou, Managing Director of evHUB, began his career in New York City as a derivatives analyst for Shearon Lehman Brothers and spent nearly two decades in the financial industry. He has now turned his attention to bringing electric vehicles to Singapore’s roads and demonstrating that green vehicles are within consumers’ reach.

evHUB is the first certified electric vehicle conversion facility in Singapore and also the first local company to convert combustion cars to fully electric cars. The company also collaborates with the National University of Singapore to train local students in EV technology, while at the same time participating in the government EV test bedding efforts. EvHUB recently launched FSG Mobility Concepts, the region’s leading retailer of premium lifestyle electric vehicles, giving consumers the choice to go green with their own electric vehicles.

David Finneren | PT Minaca Selaras

Founder & Director of PT Minaca Selaras, an inclusive business company in Indonesia primarily involved in business ventures in the areas of clean energy, fisheries, agro-forestry and energy efficiency. He has been involved with a number of companies and investment firms during his 20+ years in Indonesia (aquaculture, biofuels, agriculture, shipping) and chairs the Corporate Citizenship Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia. He is an occasional advisor to the IFC/World Bank, ADB, SNV, and selected private companies and associations. He is also a Founding Member of the National Center for Sustainability Reporting and its annual Indonesia Sustainability Reporting Awards (GRI affiliate in Indonesia).

David Steel | LeapFrog Investments

David co-leads LeapFrog’s investments in East Asia. He was previously Managing Director of Strategic Planning for AIG, where he spearheaded M&A, restructuring and strategy projects. He has negotiated the sale or purchase of financial services businesses worth over $20 billion, and evaluated and/or negotiated more than 50 transactions in Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. David’s international operational experience includes running employee benefits and credit insurance projects out of the UAE and implementing a medical network in Turkey. His first leadership role was as an Officer in the U.S. Navy, managing large shipboard teams and working as a member of an 18-nationality UN group. David holds an MA from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy. He has lived and worked on 5 continents.

Deepak Gadhia | Excellent Renewables

Deepak Gadhia did his Process and Environmental Engineering in Germany and returned to India with his wife to establish a NGO. Realising that Social Works needs money and not wanting to depend on Government Funding or on Donations from Philanthrophists they started their company Gadhia Solar to offer Solar Solutions and with help of German Inventors introduced Solar Solutions in India by adopting their developments to Indian conditions and commercialised the products. Gadhia Solar did some pioneering projects including the Worlds largest Solar Steam Cooking System that cooks 50,000 meals per day and also some smoke-free villages. Realising the need for integrated approach they also invested in Excellent Renewable Pvt. Ltd a company that was started to offer Biogas Solutions. After death of his wife Shirin Gadhia he sold Gadhia Solar and has moved to a NGO Muni Seva Ashram ( www.greenashram.org) and looks after Solar and Sustainability there and there they are working on developing Integrated Solutions and Products like bottling of Biogas plant and now undertaking a project to make Ashram of 1200 people Carbon Neutral and Grid Free. He mentors many ventures and has received many Awards including Blue-sky Award from UNESCO in Shenzehn China, Solar Enterpreneur Award from Solar Energy Society of India, Surya Putra ) Son of Solar) Award from NGO PRINCE to recognition by President Bill Clinton in a NGO meet in Hongkong.

DH Park | IWL Partners

D.H. Park is the Founder and CEO of IWL Partners and Vice Chairman of Leading Investment & Securities in Korea. He began his career in the financial market at LG Securities 1985. He held posts in sales and trading, financial engineering, investment banking in London, including directorship at Barclays. Based on his career in London in 90’s, He founded Leading I&S in 2000 and created new model of investment banking with his philosophy of “Invest with Love”. He is now leading IWL Partners, Asia’s first PEF specialized in buyout of financial institutions, founded in 2007, to facilitate “Invest with Love”. After banking crisis in America and Europe he is more convinced that banks needs to be changed for banking with Love. D.H. received his Master of Finance and Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration both from Korea University and holds the Certificate in Business Excellence from Columbia University.

Dorjee Sun | Carbon Agro Pte Ltd

Dorjee Sun is CEO of Carbon Conservation and is passionate about forests, community development, conservation and climate change. Carbon Conservation’s projects incentivize the preservation of tropical rainforests by helping forest owners and local communities generate alternative revenues through the carbon finance market. Since establishment, CC has been engaging in ongoing projects to protect Asia’s vast rainforests and biodiversity. One such project in Aceh, Indonesia, won the Carbon Finance Deal of the Year award 2008. This avoided deforestation project was also the subject of an award winning documentary, “The Burning Season”, which explained how orangutan conservation and avoided deforestation could be tied in to generate alternative monetary incentives. Recently Time Magazine has also awarded Dorjee as a Time Magazine Environmental Hero for 2009.

Prior to Carbon Conservation, Dorjee was the founder of a recruitment software company with offices in Melbourne and London, and an award winning education company which mentored over 25,000 students in 2004 (later acquired by an ASX listed company). He graduated from UNSW with Law and Commerce degrees, and also studied for 2 years on scholarship at Peking University in China. As a University of Melbourne Asialink Asia Australia Leader, Youth Chair of the Ethnic Communities Council, university Law Society President, Education Technology Advisory Board member and as a speaker on boards and conferences, he has spoken at the Future Summit, AsiaConnect and the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Australian Davos Leadership retreat and other think tanks.

Durreen Shahnaz | IIX and Shujog

Durreen is the Founder and Chairwoman of Impact Investment Exchange and Founder and Managing Director of Impact Investment Shujog. Durreen is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. She has a track record as a successful banker, media executive and social entrepreneur.

She founded, ran and sold the social purpose business oneNest in New York. She also headed up the Asia operations of Hearst Magazines International, Reader’s Digest Asia, and Asia City Publishing Group. Durreen began her professional career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley (New York), followed by stints at Grameen Bank (Bangladesh), World Bank (Washington, D.C.), and Merrill Lynch (Hong Kong). She holds a BA from Smith College; an MBA from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania; and an MA from the School for Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Durreen was a TED 2010 Fellow and Asia Society Asia 21 Fellow. She is an appointed member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation for 2011 and on the advisory board for CASE i3 at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Durreen is also the Social Entrepreneur in Residence for INSEAD’s Social Entrepreneurship Catalyst Program.

Elizabeth Larson | MIX Market

Liz Larson is responsible for ensuring quality coverage of outreach and financial data from Asian MFIs, writing analytical reports, overseeing the team of analysts in the MIX Asia Regional office, and managing partnerships across the continent. Liz joined the MIX with a background in microfinance and Asia, working with Oxfam’s Saving for Change program, Mercy Corps’ South Asia Programs, and the Microfinance Innovation Centre for Resources and Alternatives (MICRA) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Liz holds an M.A. in International Studies from University of Oregon and a B.A. in Environmental Studies and International Development from Evergreen State College.

En Lee | IIX

En is the Director of Impact Partners, the private investment platform of the IIX. Formerly an Executive Director of Goldman Sachs, En worked with numerous Asia-focused funds and advised on structuring, capital introduction, financing and regulatory issues. Previously, En was a Corporate Associate with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London and Hong Kong and specialized in private equity, cross-border mergers and acquisitions and capital market transactions. En is a Chartered Alternative Investments Analyst (CAIA) and was a member of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA). For over a decade, En has been actively involved with charity work and philanthropy and more recently, with social enterprises and impact investing. He is an avid traveller and writes for an international sustainable lifestyle magazine. En graduated with a first class LL.B (Honours) degree from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.

Fabio Malanchini | Impact Finance Management

After having graduated with a Master of Science Degree from Bocconi University in Milan, Fabio worked in the Department of Economics at Bocconi University and concurrently as a consultant in the field of microfinance. He went on to found both Microfinanza, a consulting firm specialized in microfinance and finance for development, and MicroFinanza Rating, a rating agency specialized in the microfinance sector. In 2010 he has co-funded Impact Finance Management, an asset manager specialized in impact investing. He has worked in more than 40 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, Asia and the Balkans. He held the position of Executive Director at Microfinanza and MicroFinanza Rating and he is currently Managing Director of Impact Finance Management.

Fahim Ahmed | Small Enterprise Assistance Funds

Fahim Ahmed is a Managing Director of SEAF Bangladesh Ventures (SEAF BV). Since joining SEAF in late 2009, Mr. Ahmed has been involved in the formation of SEAF BV and has led the establishment of the local operations. At SEAF, he is responsible for sourcing, appraising, structuring and monitoring investments in Bangladesh. Geoff has been involved in impact investing and microfinance since he joined Unitus Labs as a board member in 2001. Irma Cosico | ASKI Global Limited

Irma is the Chief Operating Officer of ASKI Global Ltd. She has been in the microfinance industry in various capacities for almost fifteen years, was Managing Director of ABS-CBN Bayan Academy for Social Entrepreneurship & Human Resource Development until March 2010. She headed the Microfinance Operations of the ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation from 2003 to 2005 and the Client Services Group from 1999 to 2002.

Jack Sim | World Toilet Organization & BOP HUB

Jack broke the global taboo of toilet and sanitation by bringing it to global media centre-stage with his unique mix of humour and serious facts since 2001. Realising the need for a global body on the subject, Jack created the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in 2001 as a global network and service platform for toilet associations, academia, government, UN agencies and toilet stakeholders to learn from one another and leverage media and corporate support that in turn influenced governments to promote sound sanitation and public health policies. Today, WTO is a growing network of 235 organizations in 58 countries. In 2005, Jack founded the World Toilet College to provide high quality training in Toilet Design, Maintenance, Cleanliness and Ecological Sanitation Technologies. His new ventures also include BOP HUB in Singapore as a global trade centre for the 4 billion poverty marketplaces.

Jennifer Meehan | Grameen Foundation

Jennifer started her career with JP Morgan Chase in New York before moving to Singapore. Following the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, she redirected her career to poverty alleviation, initially microfinance.

She has worked extensively with poverty-focused microfinance institutions and other social enterprises across Asia and supported social investment (through Calvert Social Investment Foundation and the Aavishkaar India Microventure Capital Fund, among others) over the past 16 years.

Jennifer joined Grameen Foundation in February 2005 as the founding Director of the Capital Markets Group, where she led the development and launch of the $30 million Growth Guarantees product. She subsequently took on a strategy role before overseeing Grameen Foundation’s activities across Asia in January 2009. She now co-heads Grameen Foundation’s global activities and sits on the Boards of Grameen Foundation India and Kashf Holdings Limited in Pakistan.

Jeremy Nicholls | Social Return on Investment (SROI) Network

Jeremy Nicholls is the chief executive of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) Network, which is a membership organisation for individuals, organisations and companies supporting principles and standards in accounting for social and environmental value. In this role he advises public, private and voluntary sector organisations on how they can increase the value created by their work.

He is the chair of FairPensions, a director of the FRC Group (a social business based in Liverpool UK), a trustee of the Social Impact Analysts Association, and a director of Social Evaluator (an online platform for the analysis of social returns). He lectures at several Universities including The Said Business School at Oxford University; Cambridge University; and the University of Western Australia.

After qualifying as a chartered accountant, he spent time working in Tanzania for the railways, in Liberia for the water company and in Nicaragua for Cafenic. In 2004 he set up Urban Strategy associates, an economic development consultancy. He also set up the BETA Model which ran an online database of UK business stock updated monthly to provide information on trends in new, closing and growing businesses, and then, with FRC, the Cat’s Pyjamas which ran events to promote the value of social enterprise. REDF was included on a Cats Pyjamas visit to the United States and encouraged Jeremy to bring SROI to the UK. On his return he began work on SROI with nef.

He has written’ There is no business like Social Business’ with Liam Black and worked with others to write a number of SROI guides including, most recently, the UK Government supported ‘Guide to SROI’.

Jiwan Acharya | Asian Development Bank

Mr. Jiwan Acharya is a Climate Change Specialist (Energy) in the Sustainable Infrastructure Division of the Regional and Sustainable Development Department since 1 September 2008. He is a key member of ADB’s Climate Change Team and is responsible for overseeing ADB’s several key initiatives including the Technical Support Facility under the Carbon Market Program as team leader, and Energy for All Initiative. He is now focusing on mainstreaming climate change in ADB’s operations through promotion of clean energy, low carbon technologies, CDM, access to energy among others.

Mr. Acharya, who is a Nepalese national, has a Master of Arts in Economics, Master of Science in Energy Systems and Management and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

Kent Pavey | Small World Group

Kent Pavey, Ph.D., is a technical executive with experience in large-scale systems integration, modeling and analysis, enterprise software, custom system development, and web-based applications. He has served as an advisor and board member for a number of venture-backed startup companies. Kent’s Ph.D. is in Mathematical Physics and he is a patent holder for distributed image processing systems.

Today he is a Partner in the Small World Group Incubator. SWGI operates out of Singapore in partnership with the Singapore NRF to fund, mentor and grow new companies in the clean tech, optics and materials spaces.

Laura Callanan | McKinsey & Company

Laura Callanan joined the Social Sector Office of McKinsey & Co in 2008. Laura leads the Learning for Social Impact initiative, and McKinsey’s work on sustainable capitalism, social investing and the Social Impact Bond.

Laura served as Senior Adviser at the United Nations Development Programme in the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery. As Executive Director of The Prospect Hill Foundation, Laura led all aspects of the Foundation’s strategy development and grantmaking. As Associate Director at The Rockefeller Foundation, Laura had responsibility for the Foundation’s venture capital and private equity portfolio, and was a member of the Foundation’s Program Venture Experiment (ProVenEx) commitment committee overseeing investment decisions for program-related investments and similar public-private activities.

Mark Tuckwood | Challenges Consulting

Mark is an award winning entrepreneur and business consultant with over 15 years experience in the global energy and tourism sectors.

In his current role, he is responsible for developing and delivering a diverse suite of private sector development services across the Challenges group, from mentoring to business advisory and investment support. Within the group structure, Mark also hold the position of CEO of Challenges Consulting.

Marvin Yeo is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Frontier Investment and Development Partners (FIDP) – a firm set up in 2008 to focus on frontier market investments. FIDP launched 2 Frontier Market funds in early 2009: The Cambodia Laos Investment & Development Fund (CLIDF) and The Mongolia Investment & Development Fund (MIDF). CLIDF will be having a first close in December 2009 while MIDF is expected to have a first close by March 2010. Matthew Gamser | International Finance Corporation

Matthew Gamser leads IFC’s advisory work in increasing access to financial services in the East Asia-Pacific region. Dr Gamser has 27 years of experience in international enterprise development, local economic development, and finance. He has 20 years of experience in senior management and governance of for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. He has worked with commercial banks and non-bank financial institutions in broadening and deepening services to households and enterprises previously lacking formal finance. His present work for IFC includes microfinance, SME finance, housing finance, insurance, leasing, energy efficiency finance and electronic/mobile phone banking. Dr Gamser also has worked for governments and private businesses around the world to create an improved policy and regulatory environment for private sector growth and poverty reduction. Dr Gamser holds A.B. and A.M. degrees from Harvard University, and M.Sc. and D.Phil degrees from Sussex University in the UK.

Matthew Kasdin | IIX

Matthew began his legal career at the international law firm Latham & Watkins, where he worked in the New York and London offices as a corporate associate advising on international capital markets and mergers and acquisitions transactions. He also advised the United Nations’ Global Compact corporate responsibility and Principles for Responsible Investment initiatives, both on a pro bono basis and as a policy and legal advisor at the United Nations Secretariat in New York. He has since worked at a Singapore-based social venture fund and as a legal consultant to Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Asian capital markets division. For the 2001-2002 academic year, he was a Fulbright Scholar. He holds a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law, where he concentrated in international law and was executive editor of the Journal of International Law & Business. He is licensed to practice law in New York, and licensed to advise on securities and corporate finance in Hong Kong.

Michael brings a decade of experience applying entrepreneurial approaches to addressing global social challenges. Michael is Co-Founder of Simpa Networks, a venture-backed technology company with a bold mission: to make modern energy simple, affordable, and accessible for everyone. Simpa sells distributed energy systems on a “Progressive Purchase” basis to underserved consumers in emerging markets. Prior to Simpa, Michael led Arc Finance’s research into micropayment approaches for financing pro-poor clean energy and water enterprises in developing countries. Michael also served as a strategic consultant to a solar energy provider targeting off-grid health facilities globally. Prior to Arc, Michael consulted to the social venture capital fund, Acumen Fund, mapping private sector investments across east Africa. Michael Tan is currently a Board member at KREDIT MFI as well as Technical Advisor at CBIRD MFI in Cambodia. Prior to joining PhillipCapital in Singapore and helping to champion microfinance initiatives within the Group, he previously held positions in both industry and academia including stints as Assistant Professor at University of Nevada, Reno, United States; Lecturer at National University of Singapore; and various IT management and consultancy positions in Singapore. Mridul Chowdhury is the Founder and CEO of mPower (formerly ClickDiagnostics), a global social enterprise specializing in building processes and systems that allow organizations to establish ‘Development Intelligence’ for better decision-making, timely and targeted intervention and results-based monitoring. Mridul’s prior work experience include co-founding D.Net, ICT4D Consultant for United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Ministry of Planning, and Center for International Development at Harvard University.

Michiel Verhoeven | Microsoft

Michiel Verhoeven, General Manager for Asia Pacific, Greater China and Japan, within the Communications Sector at Microsoft, oversees the sales operations across 13 countries in the Asia Pacific region, which is one of the fastest growing regions for Microsoft’s Communications Sector. Based in Singapore, he is responsible for driving the company’s business with leading telecommunications providers, service providers and media and entertainment companies in Asia, as well as building a strong eco-system of partners to support Microsoft’s initiatives in the region.

Verhoeven brings to Microsoft more than 20 years of industry experience. Before joining Microsoft, Verhoeven held several executive positions at webMethods, a business integration software company, most recently serving as vice president for Asia. During his tenure at webMethods, Verhoeven played a critical role in growing the company’s telecommunications customer and partner base both in Asia Pacific and in Europe, and under his leadership, webMethods grew its market share position in these regions, moving from the number three player to market share leader.

Prior to webMethods, Verhoeven was Chief Operating Officer with Asia Net Media, held consulting positions with leading firms Booz Allen & Hamilton and KPMG Consulting, and served in a business management capacity at Papeteries de Clairefontaine. He received an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from the Haagse Hogeschool in the Netherlands.

Her five years of investment banking experiences at Morgan Stanley and UBS Warburg bring an analytically rigorous, impact-oriented perspective to portfolio organizations Dasra supports such as SNEHA and Mann Deshi.

Neera pioneered the partnership between Dasra and Social-Impact International, as well as an executive education program designed and delivered to over 100 of India’s leading social entrepreneurs. A corporate lawyer by profession, Pankaj specializes in venture capital and private equity matters, especially in the impact investing and venture philanthropy sector. Penny Low | Social Innovation Park

Ms. Penny Low has traversed more than 60 countries and is one of the 34 founding members of the New Asian Leaders by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum. She has also been honored as one of the 237 (out of 8,000 worldwide) founding members of the prestigious The Forum of Global Young Leaders (YGL). Ms. Penny Low was the youngest elected female Member of Parliament in Singapore, representing the Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency in 2001. She is the Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPC) for Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, and also serves on the GPC for Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry.

Penny sits on many national committees and a member of many inter-parliamentary and friendship groups across the globe. She also has been in the financial services industry since 1995. More recently, she also founded the Social Innovation Park Ltd (SIP), a non-profit organization promoting thought leadership and social entrepreneurship in Singapore and beyond.


Pradeep Jethi | Social Stock Exchange

Pradeep spent three years at the London Stock Exchange as New Product Development Manager and has direct experience of setting up new exchange ventures as well as an understanding of their technical and regulatory requirements. At the LSE he built, developed and launched the Corporate Responsibility Exchange: a disclosure platform for extra-financial indicators (ESG measures). Pradeep has experience of gaining regulatory approval from the FSA for new products and has worked with both the issuer community and institutional investors.

Prior to his career at the LSE, Pradeep was Founder and Head of FTdynamo.com, a Financial Times business and management information portal. Pradeep has previously worked as a consultant to the UK Government on social stock exchanges and regularly speaks at conferences on – and advises on – the social impact investing and social enterprise marketplace.

Pradeep holds a BA (Hons) from the University of British Columbia and an MA from the University of Sussex.

Ralph Dixon | YTL

Ralph is director of Environmental Investments at YTL Corp & CEO YTL-SV Carbon. Ralph graduated from Warwick University in the UK with a Bsc in Management Sciences, and has a Diploma in Mandarin from the Taiwan Normal Teachers University. Prior to joining YTL Corp and YTL-SV Carbon in the environmental division, he worked since 2001 in operational and manufacturing roles in Indonesia, South Africa and Singapore in the pulp and paper converting, and recycled wood processing industries for Detmold Packaging and Hong Leong Industries respectively. Prior to that for 15 years he worked in investment banking in Asia and Europe with companies such as Hoare Govett, Hong Leong and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein in research and management positions.

He is a Trustee with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation and acts as an alternate Trustee for Reef Check Malaysia. He has been active in fund raising for the Malaysian AIDS Foundation in 2010 by participating in the Marathon Des Sables, Morocco, and Chairing the Fundraising Committee of the 2012 Red Ribbon F1 Gala, raising funds for the Global Poverty Project and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.

Randall Kempner | ANDE

Randall Kempner is Executive Director of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. The network’s members provide critical financing and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) that create significant economic, environmental and social impacts in developing countries. ANDE’s 130 plus members have operations in 150 emerging market countries.

As executive director of ANDE, Randall oversees the implementation of ANDE’s extensive program and policy agenda, including efforts to develop standardized social and environmental metrics for impact investment, training seminars on supporting and investing in emerging-market entrepreneurs and the ANDE Capacity Development Fund, a $1m facility which supports capacity building and innovation within the SGB sector.

Randall has nearly twenty years of experience in the field of national and international economic development. Most recently, he served as Vice President for Regional Innovation at the U.S. Council on Competitiveness. Prior to joining the Council, Randall was co-founder of OTF Group, an international consulting firm that advises regions and nations on how to create competitive advantage. He is frequent speaker on entrepreneurship-based economic development strategies.

Raya Papp | IIX

Raya leads the Issuer Team at Impact Partners, the private placement platform at IIX. Prior to joining IIX, she was a Director at Deutsche Bank leading the Asset Management Analytics function. She also worked with Deutsche Bank’s Foundation, where she assisted with their investment in SJF Ventures III, the first nationally focused Impact Investment SBIC fund. Prior to Deutsche bank, Raya was a VP in the Corporate Finance team at Morgan Stanley where she managed capital raising and M&A deals in the Financial Technologies sector, including the sale of the Climate Exchange to the Intercontinental Exchange. Raya also sat on Morgan Stanley’s Environment & Clean Tech Committee.

 

Prior to these roles, Raya worked at Thomson Reuters in various functions leading Strategy, Planning and Analysis including market development across the Asia Pacific region. Raya’s experience at Priceline.com assisting with the company’s final round of private equity and IPO and her role as a financial analyst with Morgan Stanley in FIG M&A, set the foundation for her career in finance. Rekha Mody | Stree Shakti

Born in 1955 into the illustrious industrialist family of Modis, Modinagar in Uttar Pradesh, Rekha Mody is in her own right, a woman who wears more than one hat. She is a connoisseur of art, social worker and a woman campaigner. She started her education at a labourer’s school in Modinagar, which brought her close to the plight and the pain of the less privileged. She is the founder of Divya Chaya Trust, established in 1984, Habiart Foundation 1987, Stree Shakti –The Parallel Force 1998.

She has edited A Quest For Roots, a book of more than 300 posthumous biographies of women from India significant in South-Asian history, second edition released in 2009. It is an attempt to rediscover and recount women’s histories in an user-friendly form for the common person.

Rekha Mody serves on the board of United Way New Delhi from 2008 and Women Founders Collective USA 2006. She is also Trustee of Women International Trust.

Reshma Alva | Leopard Capital

Reshma heads Global ESG and Impact Investing for Leopard Capital, where she is in charge of integrating environmental and social management into the investment process and cycle. She leads Leopard’s efforts to pioneer new approaches to impact investing in frontier markets, including their first impact-focused fund, the Leopard Haiti Fund, which will launch in June 2012. She will also be overseeing future technical assistance facilities that provide capacity building to portfolio companies. Robert Kraybill| IIX

Robert is a senior finance executive with two decades of experience in the capital markets as an investment banker (with Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Wasserstein Perella, and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein) and a private equity investor. Robert came to Asia in 2004 as head of Asia-ex Japan Investment Banking for Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein and most recently was head of Asian private equity for Marathon Asset Management. Robert has significant experience in emerging markets in Asia. He currently acts as Senior Advisor to Asian Tiger Capital, an innovative financial services boutique helping to facilitate investment in Bangladesh. Robert holds a BA from Princeton University, magna cum laude, and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, summa cum laude. In addition, Robert has served as an Adjunct Professor in the MBA program of Singapore Management University.

Rolando B. Victoria, has been with the ASKI, a non-government organization based in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija committed to the promotion and development of micro and small-to-medium enterprises and the delivery of social services for the last 24 years.

Royston joined Grameen Capital in 2007 to launch the organization as CEO. He currently oversees all aspects of operations in India.

Grameen Capital, a collaboration between Grameen Foundation USA, IFMR Trust and Citigroup, is a first of its kind social business enabling Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) develop wider access to the capital markets. Grameen Capital is part of the global Grameen family of companies, the flagship of which is the Nobel Prize-winning Grameen Bank founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

In his earlier assignment, as a Senior Vice President with HSBC, Royston was instrumental in setting up and heading HSBC’s Microfinance & Priority Sector business. Prior to that, he was the head of HSBC’s SME Business.

Before joining HSBC, Royston worked in Citibank India for over 8 years in various assignments both across the Consumer Bank as well as the Corporate Bank – in all, a banker for over 12 years.

He is a board member of Sa-Dhan and a member of the United Nations Microfinance Resource Group. He has been invited to address various programs, in India and globally, promoting microfinance as a sustainable tool to eradicate poverty.

Sabine Chalopin | Armstrong Asset Management

Sabine Chalopin is Investment Manager and ESG Officer at Armstrong Asset Management. Armstrong Asset Management is Manager to the Armstrong South East Asia Clean Energy Fund, a dedicated private equity fund investing in small-scale renewable energy and resource efficiency projects in Southeast Asia.

Sabine has worked in the clean energy sector since 2004 both in London and Asia. Sabine was previously with Kyoto Energy, a Clean Development Mechanism project consultant based in Singapore, where she was responsible for Southeast Asian business development. Prior to moving to Singapore, Sabine was based in London and was part of the early team at Berkeley Energy, a private equity firm investing in clean energy infrastructure assets in Asia.

Sabine has an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London and a BCom in Business Studies from Edinburgh University.

Sasa Vucinic | V-Media Ventures

Sasa Vucinic is currently CEO of V Media Ventures. Prior to establishing V Media Ventures, Sasa was the founding Chief Executive and a Board member of Media Development Loan Fund (MDLF), a non-profit organization he founded in 1995.

MDLF is a mission-driven investment fund providing low-cost financing to independent news media in countries with a history of media oppression. During Sasa’s tenure, MDLF made investments in 80 media companies in 27 development countries and provided more than $105 million in financing, including over $90 million in debt and equity investments. IN the 16 years since its founding, MDLF’s loss on its investments was below 2 percent. During Sasa’s tenure, MDLF managed to ‘earn’ an endowment of almost USD$20 million.

For all its work, MDLF was selected as a 2011 Impact Assets Top 50 Fund – a global index of leading private debt and equity fund managers that deliver social and environmental value in addition to financial returns.

Sanjay Sinha | M-CRIL

Sanjay Sinha co-founded EDA Rural Systems in 1983, which is one of the premier development consulting companies in Asia. He was a UN Advisor on Inclusive Financial Sectors during the Advisor Group’s tenure, 2006-2008. As an economist, Sanjay is focusing on economic growth and macroeconomic policies enabling low-income families to generate higher incomes. In pursuit of that goal he has charted a career applying the economic principles he learnt at university to understanding and stimulating economic activity by producers at the base of the economy in India and in other countries of Asia. The establishment of EDA Rural Systems as a research company focusing on understanding and promoting the livelihoods of low income producers and of M-CRIL for facilitating the flow of microfinance loans to them was aimed at helping to achieving this goal. In recent years, EDA and M-CRIL have been increasingly concerned about MFIs throughout Asia chasing borrower and portfolio numbers without regard to the real needs of their clients.

Sean Granville-Ross | Mercy Corps

Sean Granville-Ross is Regional Program Director in charge of Mercy Corps’ East Asia region, which comprises China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Timor-Leste. He is a specialist in economic development and a seasoned field leader with 15 years of experience working in the private and non-profit sectors.

As Indonesia country director, Granville-Ross headed a team of 275 people in seven field offices, advancing sustainable and quality health interventions, economic development and financial services, innovative urban poverty development, government partnerships and capacity-building and climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction programs.

Granville-Ross grew up in Kenya and has worked there as well as in the Dominican Republic, the Balkans, Mongolia and Indonesia. He speaks English, Spanish, Kiswahili and Indonesian. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Newcastle University and a master’s degree in livestock production from the University of Edinburgh.

Seetharam Kallidaikurichi | Global Asia Institute

Dr. Seetharam is an internationally recognized thought leader at the Asian Development Bank with over 20 years of professional experience in development cooperation, infrastructure policy, systems thinking, diplomacy, and Human Values. Since September 2008, he is a visiting professor on secondment from ADB at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also concurrently founding Director of the NUS Global Asia Institute (NUS-GAI) and the Institute of Water Policy (IWP). In recognition of his pioneering contribution to promoting engineering education and public policy, he was elected a Fellow of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 2009.

Under his direction, the two Institutes conduct cutting edge integrative research on topics pivotal to the future of Asian cities and effective water policies, respectively. In 2010, NUS-GAI received $17 million for a new initiative named NUS Initiative to Improve Health in Asia (NIHA) focusing on public health policy research and education in the region. He also chairs the NIHA Management Committee and is a member of the NIHA Steering Committee.

Dr. Seetharam is an active commentator on public policy and his writings have appeared in local publications like Today Newspaper. His recent publications include volumes on Index of Drinking Water Adequacy and Developing Living Cities.

Sourabh started Milaap.org – a micro lending platform – marrying crowd funding and micro-financing – to enable everyday individuals to do good in a sustainable, transparent and accountable manner. Started in June 2010, Milaap has just completed two years and has deployed more than a quarter million dollars in loans across both asset based loans (piped water connections, sanitation facilities, home lighting ) as well as livelihood generation ( Vocational training & micro-enterprise development)

Sourabh is a second time entrepreneur & brings the experience & learnings from his previous startup MicroAppli. After running MicroAppli for two years, Sourabh successfully sold his media sharing mobile application to OnMobile Global (BSE: 532944) where he defined product strategy for multiple mobile products & services and was responsible for revenues in excess of 1 mn USD

Sourabh holds an honors degree in Computer Science from National University of Singapore (NUS) and is a big fan of people powered platforms.

Stephen Groff | Asian Development Bank

Stephen P. Groff is Vice-President (Operations 2) of ADB. He assumed office in October 2011.

Mr. Groff is responsible for the full range of ADB’s operations in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. He is also responsible for the Central Operations Services Office. His mandate includes establishing strategic and operational priorities in his areas of responsibility, producing investment and technical assistance operations amounting to $4-5 billion annually, managing an existing portfolio of about $23 billion, and leading about 700 staff.

In addition, Mr. Groff supports ADB’s President in managing ADB’s overall operations, represents ADB in high-level multilateral fora, and contributes to managing its relationships with its 67 member country shareholders, other multilateral financial institutions, and key government, private sector, and civil society partners.

Prior to joining ADB, Mr. Groff was Deputy Director for Development Cooperation at the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) where he led OECD’s work on a wide range of development-related economic and political issues. He also served as OECD’s envoy to the G20 Working Group on Development and was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council. Prior to this he was the Deputy Vice-President for Operations at the Washington-based Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), where he helped set up the agency and led MCC programs while advising the CEO on development issues, strategy and policy. Prior to MCC, Mr. Groff held several staff positions at the ADB. Before this, Mr. Groff was the deputy director and chief economist on a large USAID project designed to encourage private sector development in the southern Philippines, a Program Director for the U.S. Refugee Program, and a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer.

Mr. Groff has worked across Asia, Africa and Latin America and writes regularly on development issues. He also serves on a number of advisory boards for development-related organizations.

Mr. Groff holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology from Yale University.

Sue Suh | The Kind Exchange

Sue Suh, Director (Community Outreach), has devoted much of her career to government service, philanthropy, and non-profit management. Most recently Sue was with The Rockefeller Foundation, serving first as Special Assistant and Director of the President’s Office, and upon moving to Asia in July 2008, as Interim Director of the Foundation’s Asia Office based in Bangkok. Prior to joining the Foundation, Sue was a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, New York, and Tripoli, Libya. Sue has served on the State Board of Directors for Special Olympics New Jersey, the National Selection Committee for the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and as both staff and volunteer for a range of other charitable causes and organisations.

Sunit Shrestha | ChangeFusion Institute

Sunit is the founder of ChangeFusion. He has raised and managed projects worth over 3 million USD focusing on social innovation development such as Internet-based social technologies as well as sustainable agriculture. ChangeFusion, formerly known as Thai RuralNet, is a World Bank Development Marketplace’s winner. He started off his career with Access Capital, a venture capital firm in Bangkok. He was also a Bloomberg Fellow in Finance. He became an Ashoka Fellow in 2009.

Tamzin Ractliffe | Nexii

Tamzin is a recognised social entrepreneur and Ashoka fellow with a Bachelors Degree in Social Science from UCT, an Honours Degree in Applied Psychology from Wits and further study in Commerce. Previously Founder and CEO of GreaterCapital and its related entities, GreaterGood, SASIX and the South African Network for Impact Investment, she has worked internationally as a financial analyst and in investment banking and venture capital for more than 20 years. She has continually sought to use the markets for the greater good and is acknowledged globally as a pioneer in building organised impact capital markets. In 2009 she spearheaded the global conversation to create regulated, comparable social stock exchange platforms; an effort funded by the Rockefeller Foundation that has seen the rise of impact investment platforms in Singapore, the US, Canada, Latin America and Europe. She also created and has received regulatory approval for the first publically regulated social stock exchange board in the world, the iX, with the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. She was awarded the GIBS Social Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2007 and became an Ashoka fellow in 2008.

Dr. Tan Chi Chiu | Lien Centre for Social Innovation

Dr. Tan Chi Chiu is a gastroenterologist and Managing Director of Gastroenterology & Medicine International in Singapore. He has been deeply involved in the medical, youth development, and community service scene for several decades. He volunteers with several nonprofit organizations. Besides his chairmanship of the Lien Centre for Social Innovation he is also a director of SATA CommHealth, Make-A-Wish-Foundation Singapore, and National Youth Achievement Awards. He is an elected member of the Singapore Medical Council and Chairman of the Medical Ethics Committee. He was previously Executive Director of the Singapore International Foundation and has won numerous Singaporean and international military and civilian awards for his global humanitarian, community, and youth work. He is a keen observer of and commentator on the social arena.

Tieza Santos | Ateneo

Tieza Santos is a social entrepreneur, a development professional, an educator, a writer and a design thinker with particular focus in the fields of environmental governance & climate change, energy & natural resource management, food & agriculture, youth leadership development, poverty alleviation through MSME development, micro-finance & impact investing, political economy, knowledge management, environmental and social impact measure and innovations for the Base of the Pyramid. She has a rich field-knowledge as well as combined technical and managerial skills from her experience working in the Philippines, the Asian region and the US. She graduated with an AB in European Studies, Major in International Relations with Double Minor Degrees in History and French Language and Culture from Ateneo de Manila University. She also graduated under the university’s MA Honors Program in Global Politics with concentration on International Political Economy and Development, International Relations and Global Environmental Governance. She is involved in various startup social enterprise initiatives throughout Asia and the US and is the founder of ChangeLab and Partner of SlashIgnite and Inspire Pilipinas to name a few.


Tim Evans | BRAC

Tim Evans is a dual national of Canada and the United States. Following under-graduate training in social sciences at University of Ottawa, he obtained a D.Phil in Agricultural Economics at University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. He subsequently trained in medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton and completed a research-residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston with a joint appointment as a MacArthur post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.

From 1995 through to 1997, he was an Assistant Professor, International Health Economics, at Harvard School of Public Health as well as an Attending Physician, General Internal Medicine, at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

In 1997, he was appointed the Director, Health Equity at the Rockefeller Foundation in New York. There he led the development of a programs related to new drugs and vaccines for neglected diseases, tobacco control, access to HIV treatment, disease surveillance, enhancing information systems capacity for vital statistics, disease surveillance and the monitoring of inequities in health, and a global learning initiative on human resources for health. During his tenure, he was a co-founding Board member of the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and the Global Forum for Health Research.

In 2003, he joined the World Health Organization as an Assistant Director General with responsibility for Evidence, Information, Research and Policy. During his tenure, he pioneered institution-wide strategies for health systems, knowledge management and research and oversaw the annual production of the World Health Report. He led the global Commission on Social Determinants of Health and was a co-founder of various partnerships for strengthening health systems including the Health Metrics Network; the Global Health Workforce Alliance; the World Alliance for Patient Safety and the Providing for Health Partnership.

In July 2010, he took up the post of Dean at the James P. Grant School of Public Health at BRAC University and ICDDR,B in Bangladesh.

Dr. Evans has written numerous journal articles, chapters and books on a wide array of topics in global health and development with a particular focus on health equity, health systems and health research policy. He is currently a Commissioner on the Commission on Health Professional Leadership in the 21st Century, a member of the Board of the Public Health Foundation of India and serves as a scientific advisor to the Institute of Population and Public Health of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research. He previously served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of ICDDR,B and on the Board of BRAC.


Tim Gocher | Dolma Development Fund

Tim is a venture capital and urban development executive with a background in energy and technology. After nine years at Deloitte and J.P. Morgan, and an MBA from London Business School, Tim became Managing Director at listed investment bank Interregnum plc. He is co-founder and partner of Academy IP – a New York-based venture capital investor partnering with major US research universities. He is an expert in sustainable urban development and Special Economic Zones, and has advised governments and private developers around the world, including in China, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Portugal and US.

When Tim first visited Nepal in 2003, it changed his life forever. He was stuck in the remote ethnic-Tibetan village of Bridim by the monsoon rains, and had no choice but to stay there. He was moved by the beautiful simplicity of life and the profound lessons he learned from the villagers. It was on that trip that he met Dolma and her family, and shortly afterwards founded the Dolma Development Fund.

Tim currently lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his Nepali wife and two sons.

Timothy Ma | Senior Citizen Home Safety Association

Timothy previously served as the Executive Director of the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association, the first 100% self-financing social service agency in Hong Kong. With his 15.5 years service at the agency, the service has saved more than 300,000 precious lives of elderly who pressed for HELP, and got more than 5.6 million calls for support through its 24-hour operating call and care service.

Timothy is actively involved in the social enterprise sector in Hong Kong. He serves as the vice-chairman of General Chamber of Social Enterprise, as well as the co-founder of the Social Entrepreneurship Forum and the Organizing Committee of Social Enterprise Summit in Hong Kong. In 2009, he was awarded the East Asia Schwab Foundation Outstanding Social Entrepreneur Award.

Weina Li | Impact Investment Shujog

Weina is the head researcher at Impact Investment Shujog, a Social Enterprise seeking to foster growth, maturity and innovations to the SE and Impact Investment sectors of Asia. Among other projects, Weina conducted impact assessments studies for health, water and sanitation social enterprises in Bangladesh and the Philippines. Weina has recently led three ADB-funded research papers on the role of social entrepreneurship in promoting inclusive growth in the Education, Water and Sanitation and Food security sectors. Weina also regularly teaches at Shujog’s Impact Academies, helping social enterprises, academics and impact investors better understand the Asian context for social entrepreneurship and learn about impact assessment practices and methodologies.

Weina holds a BSc in environmental policy and economics from the London School of Economics and an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford.

William Chan | Stamford Privee

William Chan is Founder and CEO of Stamford Privee (S) Pte Ltd, a multi-­‐family office. After spending nine years in one of the largest Swiss banks in the initial part of his career; William spent three years with one of the largest independent Trust companies in Asia. William holds the Chartered Asset Manager, Chartered Risk Manager and Master Financial Professional designations from American Academy of Financial Management and is on the Board of Advisors of AAFM (http://www.aafm.us/globalboard.html). William is also a qualified Associate Financial Consultant (AFC), a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) candidate, and an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF). He is also curriculum consultant to the Singapore Polytechnic on their Financial Markets modules, and speaks regularly in many other financial seminars in the region.

Stamford Privee is a multi family office (MFO) based in Singapore managing the assets of families based in Asia. With eight years of expertise in the Wealth Management arena, and quite specifically in the holistic approach to Family Office, Stamford Privee has also in the last two years offered consultancy and advisory on Family Office set-­‐up to Financial Institutions as well as private owners to professionalise their Wealth Management approaches towards a holistic direction. These may include investment management strategies, philanthropy, family governance issues, and others.

William is also President of the Society of Family Offices (www.sfoasia.org), an organisation set up for the promotion of Family Offices’practice with Asian families as the focus.

Wolfgang Hafenmayer | LGT Venture Philanthropy

Wolfgang Hafenmayer is the Managing Partner of LGT Venture Philanthropy, with the mission to improve the quality of life of less advantaged people. To realize the mission, Wolfgang built a team of 20 investment managers and philanthropy advisors on five continents to identify and support organizations with outstanding social and environmental impact.

Wolfgang gained rich experience in the industry as an investment manager with BonVenture, the first social venture fund in german-speaking Europe and helped set up Forma Futura, a sustainable asset management company. Previously, he was the executive director of the IT and management consulting firm Consileon and also worked for the consultancy Bain & Company.

During a trip around the world he interviewed 230 social entrepreneurs, politicians and scientists in 26 countries and recorded his findings in his book “Die Zukunftsmacher”.

Wolfgang Hafenmayer holds a degree in economics from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Wong Poh Kam | National University of Singapore

Wong Poh Kam is concurrently a Professor at the School of Business, as well as Director for NUS Entrepreneurship Centre. He has published in numerous international refereed journals on innovation policy, industrial and competitiveness policy and technology entrepreneurship, and has also consulted widely for international agencies such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, various government agencies in Singapore such as A*STAR, EDB and IDA, and many high tech firms in Asia.

An entrepreneur who co-founded three companies prior to joining academia, he is now an active angel investor and/or board member of several high tech start-ups in Silicon Valley, Singapore, China and Malaysia. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at U.C. Berkeley and a visiting researcher at Stanford University and KTH, Sweden. He received a Public Administration Medal (Bronze) from the Singapore Government in 2005.
