Robert F. Kennedy challenges Gross Domestic Product' (Glaser Progress Foundation)

Robert F. Kennedy challenges Gross Domestic Product Forty years ago, Robert F. Kennedy challenged the basic way we measure progress and well-being in America. Today, the Glaser Progress Foundation is raising the same questions through a new medium. The Seattle-based foundation released a new web video marking the anniversary of a famous speech in which Kennedy said the Gross Domestic Product counts 'everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.' http://youtu.be/77IdKFqXbUY

'What is the Genuine Progress Index (GPI)?' (GPI Atlantic)

Uploaded by CRESTHalifax on Jun 5, 2009 What is the Genuine Progress Index (GPI)? The GPI is a holistic measurement tool that government and communities can use to account for the real costs and benefits of economic activity. It counts beneficial activities as positive, and harmful activities as negative, and it provides a systematic way to integrate economic issues with environmental and social concerns. Why is the GPI important to Nova Scotians? •Using the GPI will enable us to make better decisions now and for the future. Properly valuing economic, social, environmental, human, and cultural assets means decisions will be made with our wellbeing in mind and in a way that leaves a better world for our children and grandchildren. •Using the GPI puts a value on things we say are most important, such as health, education, a clean environment, decent living standards, economic security, spending time with our family, feeling connected to our community, and our overall quality of life. The GPI also reports on how income is distributed and counts and puts a value on reducing the gap between rich and poor. •The GPI also measures the real costs of pollution, environmental degradation, crime, sickness, and risk factors like smoking, obesity, and physical activity—costs that are hidden in our conventional economic accounts. •The GPI is fully aligned with existing Nova Scotian government priorities and key policy documents, such as Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity (an economic development strategy), Weaving the Threads (a social policy framework) and the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act (2007). 'Is the Pursuit of Happiness Making us Miserable' (Australian Broadcasting Company)

Is the Pursuit of Happiness Making Us Miserable? - Petrea King Uploaded by ForaTv on May 13, 2010 Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2010/03/09/Is_the_Pursuit_of_Happiness_Making_Us_Miserable Petrea King, founder and CEO of The Quest for Life Foundation, argues the pursuit of happiness is making us all miserable. 'Happiness is found in the present moment,' she says. 'That's where life is, love is.' The pursuit of happiness is one of the unalienable rights enshrined in the U.S. Declaration of Independence. But is our relentless striving to feel good no matter what actually making us miserable? Would we be better to accept that life comes with good times and bad, and make peace with that? This IQ2 debate, held in Sydney in March 2010, pits those who believe that happiness is a worthwhile goal that can be found in pleasures material and social, against those who hold that people should abandon unrealistic goals and seek quiet comfort within. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation Petrea King is the Founding Director and CEO of the Quest for Life Foundation and practices as a counsellor, inspirational speaker and workshop leader in the field of holistic health. She is the author of several books including Quest for Life and Your Life Matters. http://youtu.be/nTLW-3Z_Kts

'The Happy Planet Index' (TED)

Nic Marks: The Happy Planet Index Uploaded by TEDtalksDirector on Aug 30, 2010 http://www.ted.com Statistician Nic Marks asks why we measure a nation's success by its productivity -- instead of by the happiness and well-being of its people. You might be surprised. 'The Happiness Manifesto' (TEDx)

TEDxDanubia 2011 - Nic Marks - The Happiness Manifesto Uploaded by TEDxTalks on Apr 12, 2011 Nic Marks thinks quality of life is measurable, and that true contentment comes not from the accumulation of material wealth but from our connections with others, engagement with the world, and a sense of autonomy. As the founder of the Centre for Well-Being, he is particularly keen to promote a balance between sustainable development and quality of life and in order to investigate this, he devised the Happy Planet Index, a global index of human well-being and environmental impact. The results made headlines. People in the world's wealthiest countries, who consume the most of the planet's resources, are not on the top of the list in terms of well-being, which raises the question: What purpose does unfettered economic growth serve? http://youtu.be/11W14b6JWbA Nic Marks - TED talk - Part 1 and 2

'A Happier Way of Life' (Leeds Media Services)

Uploaded by leedsmediaservices on Oct 25, 2010 Talking Points: New Economics Foundation Well-being is one of most important aspect of our lives, as individuals and as societies. But despite unprecedented economic prosperity in the last 35 years we do not necessarily feel better individually or as communities. Data shows that whilst economic output in the UK has nearly doubled since 1973, levels of happiness have remained flat. Beyond a certain level of income and material stability, more money has a negligible and even negative impact on the quality of our lives. The centre for well-being at the New Economics Foundation (NEF) seeks to understand, measure and influence well-being. In particular we ask the question 'what would policymaking and the economy look like if their main aim were to promote well-being?' Nic Marks, Founder of the NEF Centre for Wellbeing will be addressing delegates within the region on NEF values and how to implement these within your workplaces.
