COMMENTARY
I was the CFO of an international shrimp fishing company fairly early in my career, and learned something of fisheries population dynamics and the role of mangrove in sustaining a healthy fishing resource. I was associated with some of the early work on shrimp acquaulture and very early on concluded that damage to mangrove needed to be brought into the analysis of fish pond performance. Sadly, profit is the only driver of most investment decisions, but bit by bit, the other dimensions are coming into play.

Mangrove Action Project (MAP)

The Mangrove Action Project is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forest ecosystems worldwide. Its main goal is to promote the rights of traditional and indigenous coastal peoples, including fishers and farmers, to sustainably manage their coastal environs.

Through its global network and offices International (U.S.A. Office), Asia Regional (Thailand Office), Indonesia, and Latin America, MAP is stimulating the exchange of ideas and information on the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests, while promoting sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
