Alfred Lapadula / Lapadula and Villani

I first met Alfred Lapadula in the fall of 1974. We were both residents of the Ikoyi Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. I was in Nigeria in connection with the establishment of the Nigerian National Shrimp Company (NNSC) and Alfred was engaged in selling heavy duty construction equipment. The NNSC was a joint venture between my company, Continental Seafoods (CSF) and the Federal Military Government of Nigeria (FMG) and the Mid West Government (the State where are facilities were to tbe based).

Alfred Lapadula had a very successful rigging company in New York City for many years and was responsible for many of the heavy lifts that were a part of the New York construction boom of the 1960s. For example, all the air conditioning equipment on the roof of Madison Square Garden were put in place by the Lapadula and Villani rigging company.

In the recession of the early 1970s, the company was seriously over-extended and Alfred Lapadula sold off as much of the equipment as he could in the new oil rich booming economy of Nigeria. That is when I met Alfred. The company continued to be on retainer to move aircraft that were disabled for any reason at the three New York airports.

Our friendship grew over the months. There were only a few expatriates that were spending a lot of time in Nigeria ... most came and went in a couple of weeks ... but there was a small core of long term residents of the hotel. We were all residents of the Ikoyi Hotel in 1975 when Presdient Gowan was couped and later when his successor, President Murtalla Mohammed was assassinated.

The pictures here are of a DC-10 that ran off the runway at Logan Airport in Boston into the icy waters of the harbor. After a week on television with Boston contractors working to recover the aircraft and failing, Lapadula and Villani from New York were pulled in to do the job. After 24 hours ... on the second tide of their involvement, the aircraft was removed and it stopped being a continuing new story on TV.
