GOVERNMENT
Quality of Government (Governance) is very important
Very little concensus about what constitutes good Government

GOVERNANCE ... A BIG PROBLEM SINCE ANCIENT TIMES
SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE HISTORY WE KNOW

GREEKS and the idea of Democracy
In ancient Greece there was a vibrant discussion about how society needed to be managed. The idea of people having a role in the management of society was written about during this time ... though it must be remembered that it was only a certain class of people who were included in the concept of 'Demos'

ROMANS and their framing of laws
The laws that governed the Roman Empire more than 2,000 years ago remain part of the foundation of modern law.
TPB note: My recollection as a student at Cambridge in the late 50s is that first year law students spent a good part of their first year studying Roman Law because of its role in the history of British Law.

The Magna Carta and delegation of power
It is more than 800 years since the Barons in Britain confronted King John and called for him to relinquish his absolute control over the country. While the Magna Carta was thought to be an early case of liberty for the people of the country, in fact it was much more to do with the redistribution of power at the top of society between the King, the Barons and the Church. Nevertheless the ideas expressed in this document from 1215 were very includential in the way the founding documents of the United States were written.

The Age of Empire as of 1936
There has been vigorous competition among nations for a very long time to control territory. As of 1936 a map of the world showed how European nations had taken on a governance role in places around the world.
TPB note: I grew up in Britain in the 40s and 50s and learned geography from atlases that were very clear about Britain's role in governing countries everywhere on the planet. In my later travels to different parts of the world, I learned something of the problem of getting education right and avoiding bias. My education certainly had bias, but I was fortunate enough to be able to learn something of critical thinking that has worked quite well in my adult life. One of the things that was interesting about the British Empire was that there was actually a lot that was very good, while clearly there were also bits that were totally unacceptable, expecially from a modern perspective looking back.
It is interesting to compare Empire based colonialism of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century with the global corporate colonialism that has emerged in recent years post WWII. While there are differences, there are many terrible similarities.
International Trade
One of the major benefits of the 'empire' governance structure was that it enabled the massive growth of international trade and the value add that emerges because of trade. The strength of empire came much more from the wealth creation that emerged because of trade than from pillage and plunder. International trade was facilitated by the application of a common set of laws that applied throughout the empire, and to some extent between the empires. More than anything else, navies were built to protect trade and keep sea lanes open and safe for merchant vessels.

Complex System
The global socio-enviro-economic system is very big and very complex. The systems being used to make decisions in almost every dimension of this system are deeply flawed. There are many feasons for this.

Money in Politics
The ownership of any politicasl system by the rich and powerful is a dangerous step towards governance that favors the rich and powerful at the expense of everyone else.

Corruption
An efficient market based economy works well ... but when there is corruption this system does not work at all. The corrupt folk gain and everyone else loses. The corrupt are BOTH the people getting the checks and the people writing the checks.
Corruption is always WRONG ... but there are many examples of corrupt behavior being LEGAL!
TPB note: My career did not go well. I learned a lot about corruption. It was fashionable to describe leadership in developing countries as 'corrupt', but I asked a lot of questions about who was writing the checks in addition to knowing who was getting the checks. Too many people and organizations that ought to know better were involved in writing the checks and enabling corruption. This was not popular ... and my consulting career did not flourish!
