The frequency of catastrophic, large scale events is increasing. Our relentless, narrow pursuit of economic growth has created rigid systems reducing our ability to effectively respond to such events. Due to poor investment decisions & risk management, the scale of impacts of events from the Great East Japan Earthquake to the changes in our climate system demonstrate our lack of flexibility to absorb disruption & maintain functionality.
The stakes are now high, we are passing critical thresholds & must redefine our definition of success and prepare for a future of bounded growth. The maths is very simple. We must urgently RETHINK the way we value nature, the way we factor the externalities of our activities into government, corporate & investor behavior.
The urgency of this challenge is magnified by continuing population growth, rapid resource-intensive urbanization & aging of global society. The time for incremental approaches has now passed. Innovation, creativity, courage & leadership are now required to unlock the latent capacity of individuals & organizations Releasing a new wave of liquidity & flexibility requires a renewed emphasis on education in boardrooms & classrooms: for everyone, empowering real change. We must listen & learn from the past, from our collective memory but educate for complex interdependencies, uncertainties & disruption. We must anticipate disruption & take the first steps on the pathway to a more resilient future. It is time to RETHINK. I am, we must. I believe our paths first crossed in 2003!!!! and then Linkedin in 2014. But I am curious. You are doing valuable work (wildlife / forestry / etc ) but how do you measure (number) the value of this work. The corporate world has numbers and the results are reported in the balance sheet of the organization, in the profits and also the stock market valuation. My dream is to be able to do the same for initiatives that address the issues of social performance and environmental performance. This is what http://truevaluemetrics.org (TVM) is all about. I would like it to be a gamechanger. I would love your thoughts. Peter

While I have focused on the Software Industry, I have experience at a senior level in the Biotech and the Computer hardware arenas, as well as nine years with Price Waterhouse in the USA, UK and New Zealand, which taught me a lot about international business generally. Xtremesoft with Pine Brook Ventures has given me the platforms to nurture ideas and start new ventures in the social networking, retail, biotech, even in infomercials and Ads, as well as the 'cloud' computing arena; to participate in the public offering of two computer hardware companies; to participate in the sale of a company in the Biotech market; and to continue to nurture a bunch more in a variety of markets. Northeast Business Partners adds the brokerage capability to my 'bow' so I can incubate an idea; fund and nurture it and then sell it when the time is right. I consult on Boards; with CEO's and with non-profits. I have a good understanding of the use of electronic networking I like the diversity of the businesses, but the issues are always the same - money and people. I run Pine Brook Ventures, which invests in companies, ideas and offerings - some good, the majority bad over the last few years. They do say you have to fail plenty to get one right. I focus on trying to add value to every business, organization, process and interaction, I participate in. Equally, I am not shy to say I don't know. Specialties: In thirty years of hacking around in the business 'weeds', little surprises me! For small companies, its 'money and people, people and money'. I suppose I understand international business and people better than most having worked in three countries, run companies in five more, travelled to 70 or so and done business in numerous others. I consult through Xtremesoft. My goal remains adding value - seeing that value germinate in to business success is the 'rush'!

I was a toddler in London during the blitz of WWII. In the end the allies won the war but the UK was in debt, mainly to its good friend America! Post-war the British Empire was taken apart because the UK did not have the finance to do anything else. Now the US is in the same terrible condition!

Gabriel Mayer 4:57 PM Hi Peter, I am reaching out on behalf of Philippe van den Bossche, active early stage, high technology impact investor and Managing Partner of Zeno Capital Partners in NYC. We are currently looking for serious active investors to join our co-investor network, focused on frontier industries like blockchain, AI, robotics, medical cannabis, IoT, VR, Agri-Tech, and Biotechnology. We invest in every deal, but like to co-invest with strategic co-investors to mitigate risk and improve the prospects of success. Our Network includes individual investors and family offices, who have built and/or run successful companies, allowing us to leverage our collective co-invested capital, experience, relationships, and deal flow. We think you may be a good fit; so, if you would like an invite, please let me know. Or, if you would like to discuss with Philippe, I would be happy to organize a call. Thank you. Gabriel Mayer
Thanks for reaching out. At my age I should be wealthy and running my own family office, but in reality I have rather little money. On the other hand I have a whole lot more useful experience than most in both corporate profit improvement activities and in international development and humanitarian relief. Post career I am mainly working on figuring out how we can upgrade management metrics so that doing good for people and planet gets to be as important as making profit and building financial wealth. My TVM initiative ( http://truevaluemetrics.org ) has the potential to be a game changer ... which is exciting ... but I don't really have a role as a potential co-investor. Again ... thanks for reaching out. PeterB
