Your WEF piece about BCG and TSI is interesting and thought provoking. I am fascinated by the appalling inefficiency of modern Western society which is totally unsustainable. I read engineering at Cambridge, then accounting before US corporate mngt and consulting. How big is this unsustainability?

I am one of the founders and the Chief Executive of Social Value UK and Social Value International (SVI). The world urgently needs a new approach to accounting for value that will contribute to increasing equality and SVI was set up to help make that possible. We support the use and development of global social accounting principles that can be used by people and organisations that want to understand, manage and maximise the value (or impact) of their work. The central issue is to ensure that those effected by an organisations work have a voice and influence in decisions that effect them, whether described as accountability, feedback loops or stakeholder involvement. Our membership includes investors, philanthropists, social enterprises, public authorities, academics and others.
I initially trained as a chartered accountant and spent time working in the UK, Tanzania, Liberia and Nicaragua. I escaped to become a house parent for four years and then started working in social enterprise and sustainability, discovering it was possible to start businesses (and sometimes close them).
Recognising that we needed an approach to managing social and environmental impact that would help organisation make decisions that would lead to more impact, we initially set up the SROI Network, in 2015 merging with SIAA to become Social Value International, a network of national social value organisations. Whilst much of our work concerns accounting for, analysing and using information on social and environmental impact, I also believe we need to, and can, change mainstream financial accounting.
