TED talk by Jason Clay in Oxford England in 2010 ... together

TED talk in Oxford England in 2010

Convince just 100 key companies to go sustainable, and WWF's Jason Clay says global markets will shift to protect the planet our consumption has already outgrown. Hear how his extraordinary roundtables are getting big brand rivals to agree on green practices first — before their products duke it out on store shelves.

A refugee camp in Sudan in the 1980s ... a place similar to where I had some if my first 'ah-ha' moments

Ben and Jerry ... the beginning of making profit AND doing good

A product that returned good income to the farmers / product harvesters

Members of the audience paying attention

One planet ... and only one ... to support almost 8 billion people

According to Justin Clay, with 6.9 billion people and prevailing consumption in 2010 ... more than one planet is needed

But the cause of the crisis is mainly this ... one American has the footprint of 43 Africans. This is just plain wrong.

A European cat has a consumption footprint much larger than a single average Africa. This is not right.

These formulas show the problem we are facing ... more population AND more consumption per person

Only seconds for a consumer to make a buy or not to buy decisions. This is a problem but this is the moment when the most important consumer decisions do get made. This is a part of the strand where technology must be deployed to help ... this is a part of the TVM data architecture.

What is the difference between lamb grown in the Cotswolds of the UK and sold in England, and lamb or mutton coming from Australia or New Zealand.

What is the difference between a feed lot and a badly managed natural pasture

Feedlot

Badly managed natural pasture

Are organic vegetables an improvement in impact or not?

Where in the world are the most impactful areas that must be protected ...

Note that there are multiple (6) fish and seafood items in this list ... tuna, farmed shrimp. farmed shrimp. farmed salmon. whitefish. fish oil/meal. As a former CFO of an international fishing company, I find this interesting, and understand why ... if not being in total agreement with it!

...White fish / fish oil and meal / farmed salmon / tropical shrimp / farmed shrimp / tuna
...Soy / Palm oil /
...Pulp and paper / sawn lumber
...Beef / Dairy
...Cotton
...Biofuels
...Sugar cane

A huge number of consumers

Less producers ... but still a huge number

... but relatively few companies engaged in the trade joining producers to consumers

These are some of the major companies that control a big part of the flow of product through the system
